The sixth gen maxima is actually at it's core a larger altima--the platforms are essentially the same. In fact the sixth gen Maxima only exists in north America.
The SE-R will do 0-60 about 3 tenths of a second faster than the Maxima. It's likely a little more agile as well. It makes 260, as opposed to 265 (of course, the car-to car variations are likely more than 5 hp for either car anyhow--it's most likely nissan kept the number at 160 to keep little brother from stepping on the Maxima's feet) but weighs less as well.
I sat in--but did not drive--a couple SE-R's. Compared to the Maxima, the interior is not all that grand. The car's quite a bit smaller inside, and the colors and "cool" factor that the SE-R is going for is a bit overboard (all SE-R interiors are high-contrast two-color designs). I also despise the wheels on the SE-R, but the Max SE/350Z wheels are some of my favorite factory wheels ever.
As far as recommendation of the new Max: absolutely. I've recommended this car to several people, many of whom bought it and later thanked me for suggesting it. BUT:What are you looking for? Yes, the Maxima is a performance sedan. It makes good power, good torque, has a VERY nice graph for both, and despite it's size, is easy enough to throw around. But the Altima is likely more agile, quicker, and more "fun" to drive--it also shares the good powerband and similar numbers. The maxima is a luxury sport sedan. The Alty SE-R is simply a sport sedan. It depends on your personal taste and preference. I personally consider a car that can seat four adults comfortably, has seat and wheel position memory, heated seats/wheel, 6 disc in dash changer, a fantastic 8 speaker sound system, ample legroom front and back, and one of the best combinations of agressiveness and elegance possible in an exterior, but can also sprint to 60 in 6.2 seconds and pulls .84g on the skidpad to be the perfect car.
Curiously, I see general gas milage reports to show significantly lower milage for the SE-R. I've seen (in the 04 Max SE) 30 mpg on the freeway, and average probably 24-26. The Altima is generally reported at around 21 mpg. Of course, if you're looking at a car of this type, gas milage is not a big concern, normally. Also, a well equipped Altima SE-R will cost you only about 1k less than a better equipped Maxima SE (the SL max is more, but if you're looking at SE-R altimas, it's not going to fit your style anyhow--but the SL max is sacrilage. It's not a lexus, dammit!).
So again, it's all to preference. The cars are VERY much alike, but also quite different. To me, the current altima is sort of a 5.75 gen Maxima. I'd say go test drive them both and see what you think then.
