I have the SL, so my deal doesn't really apply to yours. What does apply is a little homework you can do before you go. Go to KBB.com and look up the versa S auto in the "new car prices" section. Print out a copy of the listing with each set of option packages you are intereste in. This will give you the invoice and the list price for your vehicle.
Begin negotiation at invoice minus any rebates available at the time. (i.e. if the invoice is the $13,958 listed in my area for an S auto, and there is a $1,000 cash back incentive, start negotiating at about $12,958.) You shouldn't end up more than a couple hundred above this number. Avoid mentioning the trade-in until you negotiate a price for the car. Most of all, don't be afraid to try a few dealers until you get the deal you want.
Before you/your dad signs for the car, go over it with a fine tooted comb. Make sure that there are no paint chips, and that EVERY feature you are paying for is there.
Good luck, and I hope all goes well with your purchase.
