How much gas mileage will 7speed auto save over the 5speed?

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

I have a 2010 EX35 journey AWD with the 5 speed automatic.I know the 2011 EX35 has a 7 speed automatic. My question is does anyone know the difference in gas mileage both city and highway driving if any? Would seem to me that this would be the only benefit in having a 7 speed over a 5 speed unless you guys know different. Thanks Dave :bigthumb:

According to Edmunds, the specs are:

2010 EX: 16 mpg / 23 mpg / 19 mpg
2011 EX: 17 mpg / 24 mpg / 19 mpg

So you'll save 1 mpg with the 7-speed. To me, driving the 2008 5-speed and liking to use the manual shift a lot, especially on hills (I live in San Francisco), the advantage of the 7-speed would be more precise downshifting on hills because going from 3rd to 2nd, or 2nd to 1st gives you a big (and in my opinion, too much delayed) bump when downshifting (you almost feel like you've lost control of the vehicle for 1-2 seconds on downhill runs; on uphills, it's not a problem). I'd like more control of the transmission on downhill terrain. If you're mostly driving flatlands, I see no advantage in the 7-speed (except for that 1 mpg fuel savings).

With the 5-speed automatic, the EPA rating has been 17 / 24 for RWD and 16 / 23 for AWD, but with the new 7-speed, both the RWD and AWD get 17 / 24.

Don't think there is much difference @ 70 mph in the final rpms in the 5 speed vs. 7. I have the AWD 2010 and get over 24 @ 70 mph...2200 rpm...so what would the 7 speed rpm's be...2200?

Drove the M on a business trip for a week with the 7 speed transmission...found it annoying with the constant shifting trying to find itself...but you get used to everything too I'm sure.
