How far are you letting the tank run down?Rember gas gauges can be very conservative and this trend increases as sensors age. What is your actual consumption in L per 100km?(If you post this, I'll translate it into mpg for the non metric J30 folks)

This sounds like a Online mechanic thing.

If you have a lot of exhaust fumes you are looking at leaking fuel lines or overly rich running( MAF?) depening on where they come from, or a few otehr possibiltites.

Please post <a lot> more details of the symptoms , cars milage whats original what replaced (if known) etcetc so we can narrow this down.

I will then move this thread to online Mechanic.

You should be getting about 520 km per tank (325 miles x 1.6). MAF, ERG, air filter, throttle bodies, O2 are the likely problems but if you're smelling gas then I would say MAF sensor first. Anyone concur?

It depends where he is smelling it.

If he's smelling it from of car leaking fuel lines and/or fuel delivery come to mind for me.

Either way I think we need more details.

I would say O2 sensors if it's running rich

O2 sensors don't come into play enough by themselves. MAF default is to make the engine run rich. Could be thermostat, too.

MAF = Mass Air Flow Sensor attached to the side of the air filter box. Connector goes bad. Try wiggling it when car is running to see if you get a change in idle. Do you have the manual the car came with? There is a way to take electrical readings from the MAF to see if it is good.

ERG is actually EGR = Exhaust Gass Recircualtory system which puts exhaust gas back into the intake to reduce polution at the tailpipe and also reduce operating temp of the engine

A good thing to do is a search on this site using the MAP and EGR keywords.

I get around 20 Miles/Gallon (7.08 Kilometers/L) in around town driving

O2 sensors may not come into play during heavy throttle or during idling but when cruising it plays a large part of telling the ECU if it's running rich or lean. If a sensor is going bogus it'll be giving incorrect info back to the ECU, possibly saying it's running lean therefore making the FI on that particular side richer.

I was getting 19/20 mpg on average.

I get ~21-22 mpg. Shytown is a big place and I spend a fair amout of time on the expressways so that probably ups the figure a bit.

These beauties are harder on gas than you would think but they are heavy.

What about the exhaust fumes he has problems with?

A exhaust leak should cause extra noise, so that cant be cause of smell.

And if (?) he is saying the smell of the exhaust is "gasoline smell" then there must be some underlying cause.
