how much will it cost me to get my steering rack replaced with new or rebuilt one?

You can get OEM parets for cheaper than your local dealer form our sponsors which all give big discounts.

They have banners on the left.

i was told i needed a new rack and they said for everthing it would come out to about a grand. i forget where it was but it was a chain garage like precision or something.

Just a WAG here, but probably around $3-400 for factory rebuilt. Call Joe and ask.

What prompts someone to require a new rack?

In my case, it was because the car would hop a bit and change direction (minor but scary at high speeds) when going over bumps on curves. Exit ramps from one highway to another (in the Bay Area, from 280 South to 101 South is a good example) with metal expansion joints would trigger my Q45 to perform this feat. Problem went away when the steering rack was replaced.

Bad Steering rack bushings, rack only replaced when they leak.
