A buddy of mine imported a 180sx with a ca18, and the water pump died just after we got it. He took it to the local nissan guys who I have had some troubles with in the past. They want to charge him 450 cad, which is 80 bux for the pump and the rest in labour. Now I heard its a bit tougher job that the SR, but is it really almost 5 hours of labour, or is my firend getting screwed? I replaced the water pump in my old KA and I dont remember it taking more that 10 or 15 minutes.

Nissan tends to over charge their customers, in reality it shouldn't take more than two hours tops. You have to remove the CAS cover, The lower cover, rad fan, crank pulley, timing belt, remove the water pump, clean the area where the gasket goes, install a new pump, I would suggest to replace the timing belt as it is already out.It might seems like lots of parts to be removed but all that can take no more than 30mins.It is much easier to replace the water pump on a RWD CA then on a FWD CA due to the location of the pump which is very close to the frame of the car, giving you very little space to work with.

Call Nissan and ask them how many hours they would charge to replace the water pump on a 1988 pulsar with ca18de, they should charge the same price if not less, at least that should give you an idea.

Thanks for the info. For accuracy's sake, it isnt the local nissan dealership, but a nissan specialty shop. It just seems way too pricey for me, especially from people who have worked on CA's and SR's a lot.
