Depends if you want a nice one or not...

You could just get a cheap beat up S13, drop in a junk yard LS 5.3 and a t56 with some BC coilovers along with other odds and ends you need and you can do it around $5000 probably.

If you want to do it right, 20-30k is about right as mentioned above...

yeah it can be costly, but you can always check out budget builds. definitely want to start on a good set of coilovers and make sure that the surrounding suspension components are up to par. Also look into getting a nice sway bar.

The car may be cheap, but the amount of parts (and labor for what you can't/don't want to do yourself) adds up extremely quickly. Want a better suspension for more angle? Great, that'll be $500-1k front and $1.5k+ rear. Good coils another $2k. Don't forget bushings - poly are decent and cheap, but if you want top of the line, spherical can't be beat and those will run you $400 for just the rear knuckles. Bash bars for $200-300 each, or just get a tube front/rear for ~$1k when all is said and done. And then you have engine upgrades, safety ... it adds up quickly.

Sure, you can have a completely stock drift car and learn the basics, and maybe do fairly well, but at some point you'll want/need to upgrade. If you look at FD cars or the higher-level grassroots cars, they have $$$ of custom fab work into the suspension and body alone.

You could have just said, "Hey guys, check out my YT video."

After 16 years doing this, we've seen all the tricks.
