If it truly weighs 2,500lbs, then you should be fine towing it. The truth is that you will need to take clothes, water, people, and camping supplies so your trailer will weight closer to 3,500. My opinion has always been that if you are within the manufacturer's limits, you are OK.
BUT
Manufacturer limits often include the term, "with appropriate options and equipment." This could mean a weight distributing hitch, trailer brakes, and anti-sway control. The biggest problem you are going to have is that the back end is going to sag and you are going to be driving very slowly. I pull a 2,600lb boat sometimes and I have trouble getting up any steep hills at more than 45mph.
The people who said that your friend will "burn up his trans" are off base. It is true that towing and hauling add more stress to your vehicle which causes things to fail sooner than they would otherwise, but if you maintain the engine, change trans fluid according to manufacturer's recommendations, and don't use overdrive when towing, you trans will last a good long time.
