Total capacity is around 10 quarts. But you can't get it all out in a single drain. Some report getting only a few quarts out of the pan. I've never gotten less than 5, and usually around 7 quarts. If you can replace 7 quarts at a time and do it twice (with a drive in between to thorougly mix the fluid) you'll get a good majority of the fluid replaced. As always, the dipstick has the final say on whether the car has enough fluid when you're done.

Mechanical flush will require 14 qts.

For short periods of time you could probably get away with the Permatex stuff. Not good long term because the interface isn't designed for RTV so it would leak sooner than the solid gasket would. Consider the extra labor required to clean the RTV off later.

sorry, another dumb question.. where is the correct level on the dipstick? below the top knotch? i filled it to where it was before, which is like an inch above the top bend/notch. is this too much? should i let a little out?

Should be 2 notches with cross-hatching between them if I recall. Keep it at the top notch or just below it. If it's below the lower notch you need to top off. Sounds like you do need to drain some out.

do you mean the section with the cross-hatching(HOT/COLD)? or between the 2 bends on the stick

Heres a bad ASCII drawing of the dipsitck:

| || | <--Mine is here| || |( (| |<--Should i fill up to here| | | ||_|COLD|#|<--or here?|#||#||#||#|| |( (| ||_|
