This had me LOLing.. Proprietary platform? OpenBSD is now proprietary?MinisterofDOOM wrote:The iPhone really has no appeal to me whatsoever. It's definitely a "fashion gadget" and not a function gadget. I don't like the full touch screen with no hardware keyboard. I don't like the lack of access (no access to battery or internals). I don't like the proprietary platform/hardware/software. I don't like the price (you can get a vastly superior Blackberry or Palm phone for a fraction of the iPhone's price).
The only things I DO like about it are the multi-touch interface and the high-res screen.
Huh? Tell that to my 15 yr old son who has broken keys on two different phones (two different brands). I get what you mean...they might be less likely to be damaged. But believe me, they can be damaged.MinisterofDOOM wrote:.. touch screens are vulnerable to damage. Hardware keys are not.
Hey EV...so you like the LG EnV2? That's good to hear because I'm considering it for my next phone (in about 6 months) unless something else better comes along before then. I'm currently with AT&T but I have not been impressed with the coverage. Me thinks it's time to go back to Verizon.Ever Victorious wrote:I ended up getting an LG EnV2 with Verizon. Signal strength and availability is WAY better than with my old Moto V190 and T-Mobile.

I was in the "omg no buttons !!!111!!" crowd too but spend more than 5 minutes on the device and you'll pay through the nose for one as well. As for additional software - more is coming and quickly (some free). The interface is light-years easier to work with than Windows Mobile 6 (from a user perspective at least, I haven't written anything for iPhone yet) and the inaccessibility of the software and battery is really a non-issue for me even though I'm a tinkerer myself. Apple did too good of a job on these to write it all off.
But yeah, if you don't need email, mobile web access and/or want music playback, then there is no reason to get one.
I got the Sidekick slide and yes I can access my battery, but why no point to me. The phone just sucks, cant install any programs, I can only have what T-Mobile sells. The phone is a waste. The best phone I had was Motorola MPX220 which was a Mobile Windows based phone, that phone could do alot.MinisterofDOOM wrote:The iPhone version of "OpenBSD" isn't openbsd anymore. It's closed source and proprietary. Regardless of what the basis for the OS is, there's a VERY limited library of software available for the iPhone. Something like a Palm based phone has vastly more software available, much of it free.
The preference for hardware keyboard has nothing to do with speed. I want tactile keys. And I don't know if you've ever tried to use a touch screen with gloves on, but it doesn't work well. Also, touch screens are vulnerable to damage. Hardware keys are not.
Why get to the internals? How about why not? What ever happened to being able to swap out batteries on the fly? It's a phone, not a nuclear reactor.
Why? So when your battery stops holding a decent charge you can just swap it out instead of having to send it in for repairs or crack open a phone that wasn't designed to be opened and potentially void your warranty.Vahagn23 wrote:
