I have a question that doesn't really merit a new topic, so I'll ask here...

What happens if you put too much oil?

Too high of oil pressure can cause a spun main bearing.

I use 5qts. 4 for the engine, 1 for the filter.

would to much oil realy raise oil pressure? or did you think he was asking about to much pressure? the oil pick up is compleatly submersed in oil the whole time so the quantity around it wouldnt matter pressure wise, however right above the oil is a crankshaft spinning at around 2k-6k times per minut and that makes a lot of wind, the wind disturbs the surface of the oil in the sump and can cause foaming. oil foam can be compressed because it contains air so it doesnt pump well, and it doesnt lubricate well so a lil extra might not do anything, to much can be cause premature failure or wear of lubricated surfaces.

Ah.

I usually buy the 5 quart jug when I do oil changes, and I add most of it to the engine. I checked the dipstick a few days ago after it was warm, and the oil was a bit higher than the perforations on the dipstick. I don't think it'll do much harm. I have to change the timing chain this weekend anyway, so I'll just put the correct amount this time around.

Odd. I use 3 3/4 for the motor and 4 if I am doing the filter. The manual says its 3 and 3/8, but it can't hurt to put 4 in. Also, I'm not sure if thats w/ or w/out the filter.

Yeah, it's supposed to be 4qts including filter.

IT IS 3.75 QUARTS WITH THE FILTER MY FRIENDS. CHECK THE STUPID MANUAL. SEARCH FOR IT IN THIS FORUM, YOU'LL FIND IT, ABT 20Mb FILE.

WITH 3.75 IS A BIT ON HIGH, WHEN I CHECK IT ON LEVELED SURFACE AFTER ENGINE WAS OFF FOR ABT AN HOUR.

CHANGE YOUR OIL EVERY 2500 MILES AND USE A GOOD OIL FILTER, TRY PUROLATOR PUREONE $6, AND DECENT PETROLIUM OIL.

10Wx30 FOR SUMMER, 5Wx30 FOR WINTER DEPENDING WHERE U LIVE(50-100F SUMMER, 0-60F WINTER FOR ME)

RULE OF THUMB, DONT SWITCH TO SYNTHETIC IF U GOT LIL LEAK AND OVER 30k MILEAGE= MORE MORE LEAKS.

READ "OIL CHANGE MYTH BIBLE" E-BOOK OR WHATEVER IT IS CLLD TO KNOW MORE ABOUT OIL CHANGE MYTH DUHHHH.. U GOTTA CRACK IT, OTHERWISE PAY FOR IT.

Better yet, don't check the "stupid" manual, especially if it's giving you bad info. Check the factory manual, which says 4 quarts with filter.

Note that the dipstick is the final word in how much fluid to add.

my car has been running synthetic and i have 126k miles, the last two owners ran synthetic as well though (one of them got hte car at 110k) the other i dont know, but im sure the car had a lot of miles before so switching to synthetic doesnt really depend on mileage that much

synthetic is GOOD

4 is good for the KA. Good way of checking your oil on the dip stick is that if your between the add/min & max/full, your good.

over filling is as bad as underfilling, ive never heard of it increasing the pressure and messing up your bearings but the crank will froth it up nice and bubbly and bubbles dont lubricate nearly as well as liquid oil does

the bearing thing is if you just go adding high flow oil punps for no reason, the tolerance between bearing and crank is only a couple thousanths of an inch, so if you start shooting a higher volumn of oil through it it will be at a higher pressure when it all has to come out. Oil pumps also make more pressure the faster the spin, at high rpms they make to much pressure, so they have a spring loaded release valve. the spring is a given spring rate to allow pressure to be purged so proper pressure is maintained, high volumn pumps normaly have a stiffer spring. the bearing surface is "washed" away by the high pressure oil.

I never had factory manual see. i got this my 240 from a sexy lady who treated her right, but didn't have a fac manual.

thanks for info, i didn't know.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------switching to synthetic from petrolium mostly applies to domestic engines. they have more tendency to leak.

Ummmm...no thanks. Talk about overkill. You change your oil every few weeks or what?

depends how you drive, how long you drive, and how you treat the drivetrain overall.

i drive my 240 really hard sometimes. so 2500 mile oil change, it certainly deserves. besides i drive only 200 miles per week. so thats roughly 3 months till i reach 2500.

when i was young and dumb, i used to take it to jiffy lube or places like that. and right around 3k, engine didn't sound well, it ran hard. revving past 3500-4k was outta question.

now it is smooth as butter, i actually enjoy revving it past 5k
