HRm..come to think of it the FSM doesn't list the capacity of just the sump, and their is most likely an anti-drain-back valve to keep the torque converter full. The only auto I have had was in a pos that didn't get the oil in the engine changed let alone transmission...

If no one else chimes in with how much it takes I would just recommend adding a quart or two then checking the dip stick as you fill. Once you have it at the cold line start the car and let it begin to fill the pump and valve body periodical check the level and add when necessary. shift though each of the gear ranges a few times with the parking brake on, letting it sit in each range for a second or two...check fluid again and take it on a test drive to warm the transmission up, once the transmission is fully warmed up you can give the level one last check, as the cold reading is not as accurate...

Red this might be a dumb question, but My 96' doesn't have a dip stick for the transmission, and yes I drive an auto. Haven't actually crawled under the car so I don't know if there is a plug on the side to check the fluid with like on most manual trannies. Not really a question but I thought I'd throw that out there. And if I'm incompetent and there is a dip stick for the transmission, go ahead and flame me for it.

IIRC some newer cars don't have automatic transmission dipsticks. I remember my teacher saying some then about trying to move towards having the transmission be a sealed unit, serviced by the dealer. I have only been around 1 auto 240, and have didn't even look under the hood. maby the s14's don't have a dipstick...I doubt there will be a fill plug, possibly not even a drain plug for that matter...automatic transmissions have a sump, and a pump like and engine, while Manuel's are just a set of gears, partial submerged that flight oil around for lubrication. Also auto's should normally be checked while on, so that you can be sure that there is an adequate level while the clutches/valve body/torque converter are full. I don't think they would recommend you sticking your finger inside while running
