Actually there is no hard and fast rule. When the light comes on... how far you can continue to drive depends on several factors. Like where the fuel sensor is positioned inside the gas tank, how accurately the gauge is calibrated to the tank, how fast you drive, how many miles are on the car, the type of terrain you normally drive in, if you drive mostly city or highway miles, the air pressure in your tires, the fuel economy of your particular vehicle, etc. etc.. The low fuel light is only meant to serve as a warning you are getting low on fuel and not an indicator that you only have X gallons of fuel left.

cool thanks for the reply but what i was really looking for was to see if there was an option to add a display modual (Distance to Empty (DTE) Function ) like the newer pathy's that display how many miles left sorta thing. I was wondering that if the 04 would have it and to see what a real big difference it would be in order to modify the 02 to aquire this feature :)

cheers !

As far as I know the ECM on the R50's doesn't track trip fuel consumption, so it would be difficult to get at. Perhaps it does track it deep down somewhere, but nothing is reported via OBD II.

If you use OBD software like Torque Pro, you can have it estimate fuel consumption based on other factors like throttle position, MAF, speed, engine temp, etc. I tried using it and it's estimates were ~30% higher than my actual fuel consumption. There are options to calibrate it, but it wasn't important enough for me to spend time on.

I'd recommend getting Torque Pro (on Android) or the equivalent on iPhone, and a OBDII bluetooth adapter. It's probably your best bet for getting / deriving the kind of real-time data you want -- and it's a cheap way to read/clear OBDII codes to boot.

My ScanGuage attempts to estimate how far left to empty. It used to be very bad at it, but as you use it and tell it how much gas you're putting in, it can eventually get a pretty good estimate. On my last fill-up, it said I had about 20 miles until empty and I put 19.2 gallons into my tank so I would say that is pretty good. It gives fuel economy estimates as well, but the best feature (and reason I bought it) is that it can scan for OBDII codes and clear them. It makes all of the estimates for fuel consumption through different readings from sensors, but it uses its own chip to do the math, so I'd say there is no way to do it without auxiliary computational power. The ScanGuage was cheap though for what it does. I think it cost me about $120 back in 2011 at AutoZone.
