There is a lot of discussion on the long-term durability of the CVT transmission, compared to traditional geared transmission's, and lots of Murano and other Nissan owners complaining of CVT problems.

I'd like to get some examples of positive experiences with CVT's. I want to hear some high mileage stories, that illustrate the longevity and durability that can be experienced with a CVT. For example, has anyone hit 100,000, 150,000 or even 200,000 miles?

I'll make this my first post. Bought my first nissan (03 murano sl) and brought the VIN to a dealer to see if the CVT had any work or been replaced. Original CVT, fluid changed once. Has 76,000miles on it. Have a 2yr/24,000mi warrenty on it from the acura dealer i bought it from so if it breaks i hope its sooner than later.

Great idea! Typically you only here about the bad experiences, lets here about some good ones!

I don't think a lot of people are complaining, it is just that the people who dont have problems don't say anything. Last time I saw a CVT problem thread there were about 70 posts in the thread...and there were over 10,000 users in the forum. Consumer Reports shows the Murano's transmission as being quite reliable. You have to take these things into consideration when you read vehicle related forums.

My first post. I've just been informed that at 68000 miles, I need a new CVT on my 03 Murano. $6200.00!!! My first...and most likely last Nissan.

I think something you have to consider is the fact that the 2003 murano CVT's are not the same as the 2007+ CVT's...

The 03's seem to be cluttered with many issues - note also that the 03 CVT uses a different transmission fluid than the new ones...

The new CVT's are completely redesigned, and are designed much stronger with a better fluid as well (my dad designed the new fluid and worked with Nissan hand in hand on this).

I do believe that they released the CVT transmission pre-maturely, and that the majority of problems you are going to see come from the older ones - the CVTs being used in the new Versa's, Altimas, Maximas, etc, are all a newer version, and the reliability on them is much much better than the previous shot. I'm expecting to see the CVT go as long as a traditional A/T with proper maintenence...

That being the case, I wonder if the new CVT they install on 2003 models that fail is identical to the original, or has it been re-designed? Since all of the current CVT's are much improved over the 2003 design I can't imagine why they would install an inferior design.

I wonder if they keep the old design around for replacements, or do they retrofit a newly designed CVT? Maybe not an easy question unless you work for Nissan, but interesting to consider.

My 2008 Rogue had a defective CVT that was replaced, but by the time it was replaced the CVT had been redesigned with a new part number, and the 2009 models were receiving the new CVT. My car also got the new CVT. It helps that my buddy is a parts guy at Nissan, and who knows how significant the changes were, but if they took the effort to change it, there must've been a significant issue that needed to be addressed. Anyway, I'm now happy that I have the upgraded design and it's been working great for several thousand kms.
