Well, working on my 240s body work, and Im needing something to cover the bondo and different colored body panels... I have already purchased 6 cans of Krylon Rust Enamel flat black... it's 5 bucks a can, but the guy said this is definetily what you need to seal rust and get a good finish. How many cans do I need? Will this be enough to paint my s13 and make it look right? Also.. what kind of masking paper and tape do I need... Masking tape + newspaper work? Thanks.

you will need more than 10. probably close to 15. masking tape and newspaper works for me, but you should try to find actual masking paper.

Well, I just returned the 5-dollar-a-can black rust enamel covering, and bought some 2.50 a can Krylon Camouflage Ultra Flat Black.... 10 of em. If I need more, I'll get more.... I want it to look good and smooth, not shiny.

its all in the technique.if you can have nice and smooth movements that are far enough away from the piece, you will do fine.

Yeah, but cheap spray paint is cheap spray paint, and too little spray paint is too littel spray paint.... I'm thinking 10 cans is plenty...

How many feet from the car would you guys say? If I remember Im not trying to achieve my final color in the first couple of coats, I think I should be fine. I've painted my fair sure of Warhammer 40k figures before, lol... Only thing Im worried about is getting the right kind/amount, and masking.

Before you spray, heat the cans up for a while in warm-hot water. It will make the spray coming out of the can finer and make it so the paint doesnt clog up the nozzle.

So your leaving the car flat black? after repairing the rust with bondo? i was told (and believe) that flat black primer absorbes moisture in the paint if left too long... thats why primer works so well to bond, and can cause rust to occur quicker... meh, just fyiI love flat black paint jobs... but I'd take the time to have it painted Satin Black, finnished off the right way

That is true, I did some repair work to a 87 supra and just primed the body work, it took about 6 months but you can tell it's rusting around the spots.

Well you can always put on a thin coat of sealer over the primer and that will solve your rust issues. Its a little more expensive, but its worth it as well.

They sell sealers in cans too? I'd probably be leaving it this way for 4 or 5 months, but yeah I definetily dont want it to rust... I bought the 'Camouflage' Krylon stuff made for vehicles and whatnot, and just got the Ultra flat in it, so I thought it would be fine.

Also, do I have to prime it first? It says that on the can, but for flat black, if I just sand everything I should be fine, right?

Bah ok, my dad recommended against the flat black PAINT because it would all have to come off... Perhaps I can find some black primer somewhere in a spray can?

just do the flat black paint. IMO it wont have to all "come off" and it wont be hard to get rid of it...just put enough to cover the surface so you dont get more rust...then sand it down when the time comes...

Alright... does it require primer, even though the can says it does? I'm going to be sanding it all with 220 anyways, and using a good bit of bondo and pulling dents.

I appreciate yours and everybody elses help through this

And just what is the boy going to put it on the car with, huh?

Anything in a can is going to look crapier than out of a nossle. And i dont think he is going to buy a sprayer or anything. If the boy is asking about real paint, then offer.

Looks a hell of a lot better than bondo +mismatching body panels... Perhaps you didnt read that? Also... now... I'm no Math Major, but with all those CS classes I had to have a little math here and there... enough to know that 25-50 dollars is less than 600-2000 dollars.

Also, perhaps some of us dont have 4 grand saved up to go out and do all of our work at once... I'm a full time college student who works 40 hours a week... I pay my own tuition and everything.. Last thing I care to here is some kid telling me that I should do all of it at once, or none at all.

Also, maybe you should check yourself... some of the baddest 240s (and cars period) out there dont look the greatest... Bling isnt everything.

Anyways, back to subject, anybody know if a primer is required for this, or if a good sanding with 220 paper is sufficient?

600 would be oem nissan paint from a 350z or so. if you stick with similar color you wont need as much paint you could pull it off with 1 coat vs 3coats saving u 2x?

if bling wasnt everything why dont u just drive it with bondo and mismatched panels? bling is everything =) or atleast something. i dont work 40 a week but i do 35 and i pay fo rmy own college tuition/insurance/bills also.

220 should be sufficient to sand the first layer primer dried. i think u should use a 400 to wet sand afterwards after another 2 coats of primer.

OK, I do body work for a living (including painting) and you NEVER want to have a final coat on top of 220. The sanding marks will show right through. That is as rough as we go even when removing the old paint (well, sometimes we'll use 180 on the really bad stuff). The flat black will be fine to paint over as long as it's not textured (alot of flat black is velvety and that texture will show through whatever you paint with). We use flat black over our gray primer all the time because when painting a dark car, it's easier to coat over than light gray and so we use less of the expensive paint. In fact, we use black trim/bumper paint as our first layer. So yeah, get down with your bad self and the flat black in your hand.

About the sanding though, 3M makes these sanding pads. They're like 1/4 inch thick sponges with abrasive on one side. They're not measured in the same units as regular sandpaper but the one you want to paint over is called "superfine" and if you can't find that, then just use 600 wrapped around a cloth or something soft (so that you don't have any pressure spots gouging deeper than anything around it) and you should be fine.

Yeah, Im sorry, I shoulda clarified I was gonna go over it in 400 to fine sand it, but if you say 600, you got it.... I have an electric sander I plan on borrowing from a friend. Very useful post though charlotte, thanks a lot...

Secondly, Juu.. 600 dollar is going to get you a crappy Maaco paint job... real paintjobs cost upwards near 2 grand... even a respray of GOOD QUALITY will cost around 600 or 700.... I've seen flatblack jobs look better than maaco jobs... atleast the flat black isnt trying to be bling. And why not leave bondo and mismatched panels? Well, firstly I think its contradictory for you to call something ghetto, then condone a bondo'ed up mismatching car... secondly, it's called preventing rust.

I agree... a good quality paint job from a professional is going to be upwards of 2k. I had my car appraised for stripping the old crappy paint off and repainting 1,500 AT LEAST! and that didn't include body work (which my car needs)... Macco paint jobs for the most part suck.

xyoufailmex : you might want to be careful using the electric sander.... If you don't watch it you could easily sand too much off... (depending on the grit of paper and the amount of pressure used)

GOOD LUCK! I hope to get my car repainted sometime... probably going to do it myself...
