Hi all,
New to the forum. Finding it very helpful...

My check engine light went on and my mechanic who I just met a month or so ago says it is a cam sensor. He says he called the dealer and they recommend I replace all of them - and that there are 4 of them.

My questions are the following and are meant not only to keep me informed but to keep my mechanic honest:

1. Is it recommended to replace all the sensors when just one seems to be problematic?
2. Are there really 4 of them. Everywhere I have looked, I can only find info that say there is just one on each side -ttl of 2 of them

Also, any aftermarket cam sensors that anyone can recommend? Some say only use OEM parts or there will be trouble but , of course, I would imagine they are more expensive..

Thanks in advance for the help!

welcome to Nico...there are 2 camshaft position sensors and 1 crankshaft position sensor.

the two camshaft position sensors are located at the back of the engine block -- facing the firewall. the crankshaft position sensor is located underneath the car next to the transmission housing.

I'd start by replacing both camshaft position sensors....you can get aftermarket parts and install yourself...it's pretty straight forward. There are videos on Youtube providing guidance to change them out for the M35/FX35/G35 (same motors are VQ35DE)...

I changed mine out shortly after I purchased the car (got it used in 2010)...
