I had my short shifter installed at the same shop where I bought it and now there seems to be a huge amount of noise coming up through the center console. My question was how many different boots are there to keep the sound out? There is the leather shift boot, the ribbed rubber boot w/ 4 bolts, is there something under that they they may have forgotten to reinstall? '89 240sx fast back btw

What short shifter? My B&M makes a grip load of noise, seems to rev up with my motor and once you pass 6k RPM, that thing is even louder then my exhuast!! There is another boot below the one with the four bolts, however, I don't think the boots have anything to do with sound, they are mainly there for protection. The boot with the 4 bolts keep dirt from flying into the cabin while the one below that keeps dirt from going into your transmission.

OBX shifter, hella noisy. Kinda figured that the rubber boot would act as some kind of sound insulation as well. It fits tight around the actual shifter assembly doesn't it?

IIRC there are three. small rubber one first, large rubber that has the metal ring with 4 bolts, and the outer leather boot. And yes, they do make a difference with noise. When I first put my new motor in, i left the boots out just for the inital test drive and the noise was intolerable. Put em all back in and its nice and quiet.
