I just purchased a 97 Pathfinder with a locked up engine. So far I am not having any luck getting the heads off (cannot turn engine so cannot get to torque converter bolts).

I unearthed 11 head bolts on the driver side head (full of sludge/gunk) and one little 10mm jobber on the front. What am I missing...the head is not even thinking about letting loose. I do still have the exhaust manifold on but it is disconnected down below. Also the cam/etc are still in the head...they don't need to come out do they?

TIA

'94 FSM shows thirteen. Six in a straight line on one side, four and three ineach of two straight lines on on the other side. There should be five around eachcylinder (two bolts do duty for two cylinders each.

Well...that would explain why my head refuses to let go <grin> Thanks a bunch! I guess those other 2 bolts are under the cam...time to yank those puppies

Not so fast. FSM says remove cam AFTER removing head.

Once again...thanks for the help! Apparently there are just two bolts I missed then. The next time I get a chance to work on it I will dig around in the solidified goop to see if I can unearth 2 more bolts :-)

Shazaam! The engine is out. Rooting around in the gunk did reveal the other two bolts and the heads were soon off. Unfortunately the engine still would not turn over so I had to pull the front diff then the engine/torque converter came out no problem.

Thanks again for the help....now I just need to source a replacement engine then "installation is reverse of removal" <chuckle>

Just curious, but what is the brief history of your truck? That engine looks nasty. Something tells me the previous owner may not have changed his oil every 5k. LOL. What a mess.

OK, Never mind. Just did a little surfing through older threads and found your previous post about oil changes.Very interesting. Those pictures should be posted in every dealership and garage, just to get it into some peoples heads that an oil change is important.I'll probably show them to my sons. I have to hound the $hit out of them to get them to change their oil on time.

i pulled my engine out like that and ripped up my input shaft seal on my transmission which caused the torque converter to leak a bunch of fluid, like a quart every couple of weeks, so make sure and check and possibly replace that seal.

Good call on that seal...I will put that on my list o crap to do just to be safe.

Thanks!

Yeah....I am guessing no oil changes....no real data though. I bought it with the locked up engine, previous owner had it about a year and there was an oil change sticker that was up to date in the window. So maybe it has had one oil change since new??
