After I fix all the other issues with the I30, thinking about lowering the car an inch or so. My question is can I just slap on some springs to drop it an inch without changing the shocks, or do I need to change to a special shock as well? Anybody with any experience on this care to advise?

Most of the springs I've seen are at least a 1.5" drop. Just upgrade to a strut/shock/spring that is able to handle the drop, and will last for more than a couple months, so you don't have to redo everything. If you're looking to drop below that, you need to look at coil overs, or other adjustable suspension.
