how long does a clutch usually last?

hey everyone,

i talked to my mechanic, said that clutches last for around 80k miles, and since i am swapping my transmission he said to get a new clutch. partially because the transmission swap will be free and that my clutch has 61k on it already. what do you guys think?

clutches last a while, but 80k seems to be a pretty low estimate. depending on how you launch your car, you can blow a clutch quickly, or it can last you over 150k. My friend's MX6, which he races in auto-x all the time is still on its original clutch at 160k+. He needs to change it soon, but it isn't slipping too badly yet.

about 100k on normal driving is an average to live by I guess. My friend has 170k on his stock clutch in a 91 integra, and he drags and autocrosses it.

guess it depends if you've anyone learning to drive a standard on the clutch. lol. otherwise...well if you're doing a transmission swap, might want to have a look at the clutch itself and figure out your situation from there.

It all depends on how the clutch was broken in and how you drive it.

I know a guy w/ a 240 who's stock clutch lasted till 180k...and I have a Ford Ranger sitting next to my 240 w/ 95k on it that has needed a clutch since about 85k.

one way to look at it is this way. you're going to have the transmission out anyways, might as well think about swapping a new clutch in. saves you time and money later on
