Will be replacing the idler pulley bearings soon, and am wondering if I should replace the water pump while I'm in there.

Assuming good maintenance, what's the typical life expectancy for a water pump? (I'm assuming the pump life expectancy of all Q generations is similar.)

I would imagine is depends on how assiduous you are about coolant maintenance. Frequent changes and distilled water dilutant, even OAT coolant could significantly extend life over public water top ups and coolant changes every 5 years.

I had the original changed as preventative maintenance at 203,000. It was not leaking or making any noise.....may have made it to 300K????? Didnt want to risk it, so changed it along with original idler pullys and thermostat.

105K (km), but at 15 years I think age on the seals was just as important.

Records show the water pump changed at 186,000 on the 90Q. The water pump on the 94Q looks original at 160,000 miles. As Brian and others alluded, flushing coolant regularly and never overheating are the keys to longevity.

I should add that at 170k my WP didn't fail, though it was making a little noise. I replaced it in an attempt at narrowing down a cooling issue, which finally required me to replace the t-stat, cap, and radiator.

Mine lasted until 14 years and around 175k. I replaced it with an autozone POS in 2007 and it just failed again today. When the OEM one failed, it leaked. This piece of crap locked up and almost cost me my motor. The temp peaked out right before the "normal" overheat mark and all is well....

It was leaking (badly) when I bought that car at 171K miles so...I'd say the water pump lasted less than 171k miles.
