I am looking at purchasing a 2008 G37 6MT, but couldn't seem to get the shifting down during the test drive. I have read of others having theirs for over a month and still not be able to smoothly shift. I will be doing a lot of in town driving and want to make sure the 6MT will work for my daily commute.

If you drive in stop and go traffic it will be a pain. I had mine for years and sometimes I could shift smooth most of the time. That ended when I installed a lightweight flywheel and heavy duty clutch!

Probably took me about a month. Sometimes 1st & 2nd is still a little rough, but I usually get it. I generally just try to start in 2nd, then it's pretty easy.

Its all about easy throttle and knowing the friction point as far as pedal release.
If you practice it frequently, from stops and doing a 1-2 shift, you can learn it by memory. I used to have a crappy Rodeo 5 speed with crap transmission, crap synchros, and crap motor. But since it was a super awesome guy driving it, people in the back would think it was a cvt. Yea, thats right. Not even automatics shift as smooth as me! ;)

I've had my 06 6MT for about a year and a half. I drive traffic every morning and every night in downtown Montreal. I've noticed the way the clutch shifts has gone down in "easyness".
Once it gets broken in, its very mechanical and makes a lot of noise. I have gotten used to it, but it still annoys me sometimes. I just chalked it up to be unrefined Nissan clutches....

I have driven manual cars all my life, and started with motorcycles at the age of 11 (now 30). The G clutch/transmission is the worst in terms of refinemment, but it does the job. You just have to get used to it. From a stop in first, I found the best RPM range to be about 1500 RPM to take off smoothly and with the least chatter possible. Adjust for uphill starts accordingly 1500-2000 RPM.

When I drive my GF base civic, its a whole new world.... I think they use butter in them because it shifts soooooo smoothly.

Hope this helps :dblthumb:

Oh yeah, I still make mistakes once in a while (lack of attention or when distracted), and believe me, the G will make you feel that mistake!

Being use to a newer MT car will help. When I test drove a few '04-'06 6MT Coupes last year I never had a problem. But I think that was because I had gotten use to my '07 Versa 6MT, when I first got it I had issues when the engine/electonics were trying to 'help' shifting. I have always been so use to old 5-speeds (S13s) that it was a lot different.

It does take awile to get used to the clutch but I found that shifting at 3k to 3,5k RPM from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd makes for smooth shifts for me.
