Here is my dilima, (sp)

I am going to be getting my SR early next week and then have 2 weeks to have it up running and broken-in before I head up to Iowa to run on the roadcourse. I just wanted to know how long some of you spent before you started to drive the SR hard? I was supposed to get it this weekend but looks like it is not going to happen. It is a 8-10 hour drive up there so that would count has break-in also I guess. I plane to drive it 300 miles then change the oil and then run it another 500 miles or so and then change it again. The engine is a 96 s14 sr20det with 26k miles on it. With that low mileage the engine should be in good condition anyway. Just wanted to hear from you guys if I will be able to have my car up and running before the track day. Also if any of you want to come and drive it is $150 for all day. I am going with my former Probe group. So far we have 10 people so going to gets lots of track time.

Thanks for your input, Marcus

Well since it is a used motor it is already technically broken in. But i would allow a little bit of driving to get all the cobwebs out and then it should be just fine. I wouldn't worry too much about it, 100 miles at the most would be plenty of time to get that engine going good.

I would just change oil for the first 100 miles. Then change again after 200. Then buy a cheap oil filter and change it along with the oil another 200miles later. Then change to synthetic oil and a nice filter.

personally what I am gonna do is fill it with some Castrol and a crappy filter, drive it about 500 miles, and then drain the oil and get some dang ol' Mobil 1 in there along with a good filter.

hmmm I hit 15psi on my CA after pulling it out of the driveway from installing it. All you have to do is warm up the oil and you good to go (dosn't really matter if it's been sitting for 2 years or 2 days, after it's warmed up it's good to go)

I've heard the 5-50-500 breakin recommended, thats what I did. Good stuff.

Start it, drive 5 miles, go back and check everything. If something is wrong with it, it should become apparent by then. Then drive it 50 miles, change the oil, and check everything once more. Then drive it 500 miles, change the oil, and check it again. If everything is ok, then you have a good motor and you can proceed destroying it.

I am not recessarily recommending this but when I asked someone the same question they said "you're not familiar with the "down and dirty break in?" Apparently you get on the highway, floor it smoothly to fourth gear redline, then without braking let the engine wind all the way down through the gears. i guess if anything was going to go wrong, it would happen then. Like I said, I'm not necessarily recommending it.

According to my knowledge, breakin in means running the motor w/ INconsistent rpms.

yes, but I still say why do we have to "break it in" at all? The motors always come with enough miles to have already been broken in. Just put craptastic oil in it for the first 500 miles and then change to sythetic after that...

sup...i agree w/ your reply. But i was jus commenting on those that says to break it in. But I personally wouldn't even do the break in. Its kinda like letting your favorite honda sit through the winter and then break it in during summer?.. No please....:)

When I say break-in, I mean more of letting the engine get all the crap out that has been build-up from sitting.:toilet I have a Spec stage 2 clutch and it says it must take 1k miles to break-in. That to me sounds like a lot of miles for break-in, seems like 500 or so would be fine. Anyway hope to have engine up and running by this weekend. :ylsuper
