i have yet to find good revies about this setup...4.63 final drive with NA KA? there are a bunch of reviews for turbo'd cars but not really much for NA KA. this setup would be for a track car, so MPG is out the window. how big of a difference is there going from 4.08? how much faster does it feel?

It'll accelerate better.... you will have really crappy 5th gear highway driving experiences. That's about it.

What kind of racing? That will help...

I had a 4.36 ratio in my first VLSD (N/A KA with header and exhaust). Was awesome.

4.63 is gonna be pretty damn steep.

pezi: road racing. with the power i have and length of tracks here in socal i would prolly reach max 100mph before i slam on the brakes.

azhitman: for comparison reasons, did u race anybody that wouldve beaten you if you didnt have 4.63?

I didn't have 4.63. So, no, I really can't even comment on that.

Here's what 4.63 will feel like: 2nd will feel like 1st. 3rd will feel like 2nd. 4th will feel like 3rd. 5th will feel like 4th. And 1st will be good to about 15mph. :)

aka the launch gear....

IMO, a 4.36 is better for road racing. A 4.63 is more of an autocross/drift gear.

im not a drifter. i autocross once a while. my focus is road racing. better for road racing, what do you mean? if im only going to reach 100mph on the track(longest straight), 4.63 would help me reach that speed quicker. with a 4.36 it would take me longer to reach 100mph.

I'd go so far as to say that a 4.0 is just fine. 2nd gear already feels short and useless enough as it is. I had a 3.91 in my car in Germany and it was nearly perfect.

I'm not 100% on this but rough speeds per gear at 6500RPM should be around.....

1st: 31MPH
2nd: 55MPH
3rd: 80MPH
4th: 104MPH
5th: 137MPH

Cruising at 75mph should net you around 3500RPM in 5th gear.

Isn't it usually recommended to get a lower ratio when you drastically up the power?
4.63....just don't go on any long trips on the highway and it shouldn't be too bad.

Wait, wait,wait...

By "road racing", do you mean street racing? Like what Honda kids do to piss off cops and show off their underglows and body kits?

Nice find, Razi. Anyway, my bad, I missed the whole "with the lengths of the tracks here in socal" bit he said.

4.36 is what the CA18DET 180sx's had in the early versions, IIRC...

And N/A SRs.
I shoulda checked my 180sx vlsd before I put it in, I don't know if it's 4.36 or 4.08. :(

lol. no street racing. yeah, thats why i was saying a 4.63 would be good enough for me because of the lenghts of the straights here in socal. thank u guys for all of your input. its going to be worth spending $300(installed).

No, I think everyone is saying it will be too small of a gearing to be worthwhile. Didn't you read what AZhitman said?

I think it'll be fine. Might be too steep, but if it is, you're a ring gear away from remedying that.

For $300 installed? Oh hell yes.

Meh, if I knew I was going to be taking a long trip, I'd just swap the diff. It's not really that difficult of a task.

I'm guessing you won't even encounter that kind of issue as it's just going to be a track car. But in town, a diff with that high of a ratio would be extremely annoying, for me anyways.

I know with the stock KA and diff (4.08 I believe) it was right at about 3K rpm at 65mph.

currently with my stock ratio (4.08) going 70mph puts the engines rpms at 6900. based on top speed/ gear ratio calculation, if i switched to 4.63, going 65mph would put the engines rpms at 3100. not bad i guess.

Those numbers don't make any sense.

this calls for simple math. I have book somewhere telling you how to calculate gear ratios and final drive at rpm

alms, could you confirm what the websites calculate? i used the websites, 3 different ones, and i get the same thing. 4.63 final drive-65mph-round 3000rpm.
and for stock 4.08 final drive-70mph-round 3000rpm

no typo. my cousins ka24de runs the same as mine. 70mph around 3000rpm with 4.08 on 5th gear of course.
