I am looking to install a factory Nav Unit out of another G35. Is this hard to do? This ebay item comes with the unit in the glove box but no disk.

are the G's pre wired for the nav's? (They are for the spoilers...) how hard is it to get the cables and do the upgrade?

Its a pain and its expensive. You'll need a new $900 and your GPS antenna and things will need to be wired and seriously, its like getting a complete gender change. except you're making an upgrade. and you really aren't losing something at the expense of gaining something but... well ok its NOT like a gender change. But it is pretty darn complicated and intensive. dont bother with it. i've yet to meet someone who has done it successfully.

I used to do radio installs and still do on the side.Let me tell you right now that putting factory navi into a car without OEm navi is a nightmare. You have to realize your car is wired throughout without this intergrated. You must also realize that you need more then then navi unit itself to install this.My opinion get a nice DD head unit with navi and you'll be much happier in the end....as well as saving atleast $1,000 in the process

I have seen a couple double din's and it is nice... I just really don't want to lose the cd changer!

So my car is missing a lot of the wires for the Nav?

I hate that I don't have the nav!

I have a AVN 6620 Eclipse Head unit in my car. It's priced pretty well, has dual cd slots...One for the Navi Cd the other for cd's.mp3's,Dvd's etc.Its a nice unit without breaking your wallet. The TomTom Elipse above is nice ,but more a novelty.I'd rather have a nice 7" screen then a 4'' one.Pioneer has some nice DD units as well

Here's a link for the AVN6620:http://reviews.cnet.com/car-gp....html

I know I am bringing this back from the dead but....

What is it that would be missing?

If I install the unit with the Screen, and i have the DVD unit that goes in the glove box, I would have to install a GPS antenna, What other wiring is needed to make this Work?

I have an uncle that has been doing AV work for years. He has done some expensive systems in really expensive cars. He is willing to do it with me but I want to have a little bit more knowledge before I spend 500 bux on the unit.

I am not sure how a 2006 Infiniti interior is set up, but what you are seeing is a carputer which you can create using almost any operating system.

Assuming you were going with Windows, you could easily do the same thing (well fairly easily). The key is mounting the touch screen. From there you can go with a really good nav system such as Delorme's Topo which runs on dvd and covers the entire U.S. Updates to the system in the form of a new program typically runs less then 70 bucks for each new version. The GPS unit itself which some have actually mounted in the glove box of some cars with success runs about $100 or less.

With the carputer you can also net various other systems together including radio, cds, compact or sd cards, anything that can be done with a Windows computer. You also can have online information about the car itself. With my desktop computer in my room I have a USB am/fm radio as an example of what could be done. If you live in a large town with good wireless coverage then you could have internet radio with more stations than any other Infiniti available.

What you want to do however is make sure you at the minimum use harden hard drives. Also currently you can now purchase solid state hard drives which are still expensive but rapidly dropping in price.

A computer would be even better in the car...

I bet It would be super easy to do with a laptop. And just ad a touch screen into the VGA port. and the touch part would be on run through a usb. Hell even if you kept the laptop under the front seat. or something like that.

That would be SWEEET to have touch screen. The nav definitely feels archaic compared to newer cars.

Let me also add in: if there were an easy way to add an Video/DVD.VGA input.. that would be awesome.

Hey guys, I sorta stumbled across this thread and I wanted to chime in. I have a carPC in my G and if anyone has any questions about installing one, I'd be more than happy to help. Also one super cool thing you can do with a car PC that I didn't see mentioned here is interface the PC to the ECU and view all sorts of engine data. The software I'm running also has a Dyno and Drag strip feature that's really neat. The quarter mile times are dead on, however, I'm still messing with the Dyno, I'm not getting consistent runs.

I got questions for you...

What screen did you use?

What Computer? I was thinking about using a Mac Mini....

I know they sell an OB II adapter that connects to a usb.... Is that what you are talking about?

Give me some more info!

what was the cost?

The screen is a xenarc 700tsv, the computer is a home brew, powered with a DC to DC power supply. The power supply is the key thing with the mac, if it has a standard ATX psu, then it should work. Yep it is usb to obdII. If you have a PC to use, you should be able to get a basic system up and running for 500-600. heres some pix.

Is this something that you did yourself or is this something that you had done?... Does the screen hide in the dash?

Where did you put the computer?

Could you use a power inverter for the power?

I am thinking the best way is to use a laptop... I have an old one that I don't use... It has everything hooked up like wireless and an operating system. I can hook the touch screen to that and a wireless keyboard with track ball.

I also have a phone with tethering internet connection. I could be on the net while driving lol...

The battery would be great cuz you could just put the laptop on standby over night and it would charge while you dive.

I did all the work, You could use a laptop, however if you would like the operation to be as seamless as possible use a modded desktop or a real carputer. They will start up and shut down with the key. The laptop would most likely be manual on/off. You could use an inverter, but there again it will be more difficult to automate. I use a wireless mouse and kb even tho its touch, its just easier for me. I tried tethering, not sure if was my carrier or phone or what but it was a pain and would drop out all the time, so i just rely on wifi.

Where did you mount the pc...

How did you get the power supply to work?

I measured and the Mac Mini would just fit in the upper glove box.

How did you get it to connect to the stereo of the G for music?

The power supply is a M2atx. It is for car PCs. The computer is in the trunk under the carpet to the right of the spare tire. I used a PAC niss2 to input the audio into the stock system. Heat may be an issue if you mount it in the upper box, unless you cut the back out or something. I was going to install a DVD drive there, but I found I just watch movies from the hard dive and there's no need for a DVD drive.

What did you use to mount the screen...

I think if I get a Mac Mini, 200 bux... Wireless keyboard, and some type of mouse... If I use a power inverter that I have... It comes on when I turn the car on lol...

the Mac Mini will be really nice in the glove box... I will cut the back out or put a vent for wires and air...

I found the screen you have on ebay... and I am winning for 40 bux lol... But Im sure that will go for over 100 bux.

Right now I am using a 12 inch tablet computer which would work fine if you have the room. I have seen some super small 6-8 inch computers at Best Buy (not for the last few months however).

I think the thing that would be missing on a laptop is that although the hard drives may be a little bit better for this purpose than a desktop type of drive they are still not exactly the 'hardened' hard drives that probably should be used.

There are several companies that specialize in these types of computers.
