With winter fast approaching up north here, I was wonderin how hard is it to install a remote starter?

The guys at crappy tire were saying its very straight forward, and completely plug and play - based on their own installs on their own manual transmission cars.

My neutral safety switch has already been removed by the previous owner for some reason.

So has anyone installed one before on our cars?

thnx,

I never heard of a plug and play remote starter.... you gotta tap into the ignition and tach wire...

but if i did all the repairs on my 240, which included timing chain, and all the mods on my TA... which included an electric waterpump install...

I should be ok with this shouldn't i?

yea just make sure you remember to leave it in neutral when you get out your car. It could get ugly if you started it in gear in a parking lot full of kids.

HAHA yes yes... make sure you have a habit of leaving your car in neutral when you get out. My idiot friend didn''t and his Maxima drove into some bushes.

trust me i know well enough about that. I'll be sure to make a mental note.

So how hard is it to install, based on what I've done before listed above...

What type of remote start? You adding to an alarm? Helpful hint: when i install anything where I am taping into my ign. harness I try to make sure I dont get any cold solders. Nothin worse than a solder coming apart when its minus colder than @#&*. Good luck, let us know how it went!

won't be adding an alarm nope.

For the kit I seen, I don't think soldering is involved. hrmmm.

I wonder if theres instructions on the net somewhere for installing one on a s13 240sx

I was thinking of getting one of those Pro Start units from Canadian Tire.

Theres one you can get for alarm and powerlocks etc, but I was going to get the plain-jane start your vehicle only starter :)

Those are a fairly easy install. I think it's the same tech. as a command start. Holla if you have any questions. Maybe I could help!

once I move into my new spot, which is starting this weekend, get settled away and some cash on the go...I'll be looking at doing this.

So keep your eye out for a Remote Starter install thread ;)

thanks man,

this sounds like something that would be rather simple.. I might try it out.. go to a local hobby store and get a remote switch and a remote or soemthing...

the problem is... just like when garage doors first came out and they only had like 5 diff frequencies for each model.. and you go to open your garage and it opens and your neighbors... you dont want some one accidnetly tuning into your frequency and having your car running all night...

LOL... I couldn't stop laughing after picturing a person sitting in their car with the engine off listening to the radio or somethign like that. Then all of a sudden the engine started... That would be an awesome prank.

most remotes use code hopping technology so there are thousands of code combos. Alpine for example uses a million code variations in their hopping codes.

Ibrowne:have you thought about going with an alarm intergrated remote start. DEI(viper) makes a great one, a 500hf(i think) for a reasonable price. security and start capable all year round!

Crap, now i sound like a salesman! Sorry man!

My car has no power features other than power brakes and power steering :D

I have no desire to get an alarm integrated system, most likely the ProStart from Crappy Tire is what I'll get (the lower model one)

thats good too. The prostarts(i believe) are bought technology from command start. All alarm/remote start companies buy the designs from each other. You said earlier that you thought it might be a plug and play system, but the prostarts are an ign. harness install. Its pretty simple though.I think it's an 8 or 10 wire setup. the hardest thing is the tach wire(or coil) but i have the info for that if you need it!

just installed a remote start on monday. The remote start came with an alarm but jus installing the remote start part wasnt hard at all(15 min max). Its pretty cool though i recommend it me and like 4 of my friends have it so... All you need is wire taps and a test light. Thats all i needed.

Curious about this neutral Safety switch you are talking about. Is this a canadian feature?

I assume you are talking about the car not starting unless its in neutral. The only safety feature I have like that on my 93 is the clutch has to be pushed in to start.

*shrug* Just curious.

The neutral safety switch means you can not start the car at all unless the clutch is in.

Doesn't matter about if its in neutral or not. If its disabled you don't wanna try starting without the clutch in while in gear!!!

Instead of taping the switch how about you wire a SPDT 30 A bosch relay to close the circuit, as what normaly occurs when you push the clutch all the way in, so that only when it is remote starting the switch is closed. I think the neutral saftey switch on manual vehicles is mounted on the transmission one nearby turns on the reverse lights when you are backing up. The only feature I can think of that uses the switch would be cruise control if you have it. This prevents the vehicle from over-reving if accidentaly you pop it out of gear while on the freeway at set speed with CC on. I had to replace the neutral safety switch on my car. We were driving at night with the CC set and all of a sudden the check engine light comes on I pulled the codes and it was the neutral saftey switch, ordered I for like $8 from Nissan. But you said you don't have CC though, so you might not have a neutral safety switch. I don't know for sure?
