...to rebuild an engine on your own? My wife recently got a new job and our schedules are ok for now with sharing one car, but i am looking for a new job, and i know for sure if i get a day job our schedules will clash, I cracked the block on my talon, and the mercedes is crazy on gas and i have trouble with it and this one was imported by a guy in the army from germany, so everything that goes wrong with it costs like 2 to 3 times more, to fix it, so i have a Datsun 280Z 2+2 and the engine is ok, but it has like almost 200,000 miles and i think right now would be a good time to do it with the night job and the way our schedules are ok, so is it easy, something i can do in a couple of days? that way i can take my Z and have fun while saving gas, while my wife takes the versa and stays safer, while saving gas.

That depends on how mechanically inclined you are, access to tools, and available time.

I've never worked on one myself, but I imagine the L-series are pretty simple motors to rebuild. The L28E is overhead cam and fuel injected, but aside from that it's pretty basic tech.

If you're comfortable with a wrench and understand the basics of how an engine works, you can use a shop manual and do it yourself. Just take your time and triple-check everything. Best way to learn is by trying, but at the same time the first try is the time you don't know what to "look for."You might even look into picking up a junkyard motor to use as a trial-and-error and practice setup before you dive into the one in your Z.

If you're going to do it, you might as well take the opportunity to make some improvements while you're in there. Pop into the classic Z forum and those guys should be able to answer all your questions and help you through the project. Sounds like a lot of fun to be had.
