Found this neat typing timer through a friend.
I decided to be objective about it and not read the passage first since it would probably be a better, more honest measure.

So, how fast are you?

I was 71 WPM, 4 mistakes, all lame spelling errors from zooming over the keys.

I can type 100 words a minute... in my own language.

If I had nine of my fingers missing I wouldn't type any slower.

Yes, yes it was.

I don't know if it gives the same piece of text every time, but I had a passage from Much Ado About Nothing.

Also, I scored 53wpm and had 3 errors. I like to think the Shakespeariness knocked a good 10wpm or so off.

This test netted me 89 WPM with 4 errors.
Typing test like this are pointless an inaccurate. The challenge here is not the typing, but the transcription. When you're "really" typing something, it comes from your head, not a page. You're not seeing, reading, typing. You're just typing. Not comparable. I'm typing this forum post far more quickly and with fewer errors than I managed with that typing "test."

I can type much faster if Im thinking of what Im typing, as Im typing it. A good guess would be maybe about 50-60wpm.

Mine was about a guy named Harry Lime, lol. And 120 is sick fast.

Well, I didn't really try the test, but on typeracer.com (which is another "measure your speed" site) I would get around 100-120 WPM consistently. As MinisterofDOOM said, when you know what you're typing in your head it's really different from copying something.

Without the transcription there's no way to judge either accuracy. Additionally, as the test is a setup for learning touch typing the transcription encourages just that, typing by touch and without looking at the keys.

Typing tests for the modern day equivalent of secretary pool rely on similarly styled tests because a secretary just typing what she thinks doesn't happen, she's invariably transcribing something for someone else above her pay grade.

In the end it doesn't matter, Swype is faster - can't wait for the keyboard. :)

Oh yeah, 50/0.
