Ok guys, I know I am the millionth (is that even a word?) person to ask this question...but here it goes again. I have never installed an engine before, but this guy I work with (shade tree mechanic) has installed engines, rebuilt trannys, etc. He's never installed an import engine before though. Should I ask him to help me install an SR20DET into my S14 or should I spend $1000-$1200 to have a local shop do it?

Please give me opinions on what you would do. I want working A/C and Power Steering. I also plan to install a FMIC, probably Greddy or something like that.

Installing a motor is easy.

Doing a wiring job and getting the motor to run properly isnt, and a job that 'should' be left up to a professional mechanic.

What's the big idea with trying to 'jack my thread, vboyq?:)

So you're saying that the wiring makes it difficult? If so, then you'd advise spending the money on the mechanic. Thanks for the opinion...keep em coming guys.

I think that the install is pretty simple. Nothing too hard about it. Hardest thing is probably the wiring, but I don't think that it's too hard though. Srswap.com has a good layout on how to rewire everything. You can even send it in to them and they would rewire it for you. I think it costs about $100 dollars or so. The only big problem is if the motor that you bought isn't too good anymore, then you'll have some problems.

With some time, money, the internet, the right tools, us, and some common sense you should be able to do it with no problem. At least that's what my plan is. I know how an engine works, but I don't know everything. My biggest fear isn't the wiring, it has been discussed 100 times on this board and many others. It is what happens when I put the engine in and it doesn't start. That's where this board, the 240sx.org mail list, information on the internet about engines, and any other source is going to come in handy.

One guy gave me a good piece of advice. Before you try starting her up double check everything. Usually when you do something like this the first thing you want to do when done is start it, but while moving things around and putting new items on you are bound to unplug a wire or undo a clamp. Better to double check it all before you have your dreams doused the first time starting it.

Oh, and I haven't put my motor in yet, so take this for what it's worth. I pick it up this weekend, but I probably won't be putting it in until May.

Good luck!

Yeah, but not at work. The best thing to do is just to email me. [email protected]

I'll be in Gainsville this weekend. I'll be there for a retreat. What kind of car are you driving right now?
