Here is the deal, and some of what I'm saying is redundant, as other people have mentioned it in the history of this post. A professional car thief knows what they are doing and would very carefully investigate the job (I.E. which car they have on their shopping list) before the go randomly smashing windows. If they want your car they are going to get it! That's it, no matter how many kill switches, alarms or tracking systems etc… that you have installed. However these devices can be highly effective in preventing break-ins and people who just need a ride. They will just move on to an easier target. The best bet is to garage it when possible and have a good insurance policy, to cover whatever losses may occur. Insurance companies are not a law enforcement agency they don’t care about legality of you vehicle they care about the premium you pay. If you want coverage on custom modifications, stereo equipment, then you need to specify this to you insurance underwriter so that they can charge you a an appropriate premium to cover the risk of insuring your vehicle. Yes this means you will pay more for insurance regardless if something happens to your vehicle, that is why they call it insurance! They may make judgments that your engine has a much higher HP rating making it more risky to insure, and you’ll have to pay more. Notice how I never mentioned the extra liability to other vehicles on the road that’s another major factor. Just be honest, lying or not telling the insurance company what exactly you want to insure is the most likely way get your policy cancelled. I recommend buying an alarm with multiple sirens, maybe even pain-generating size, in areas sensitive to alarm connections. Make sure when you have it installed they put in a back-up battery, and starter kill. Pagers and tracking devices can help you alert authorities as to what has happened and recovery of your stolen car is more likely. The less time has elapsed from the time they break in to the time you know about it the better your chances of keeping your car & it’s components. Believe it or not tinting windows actually helps thieves, due to the fact that when glass shatters if all the pieces stick to the window tint film and instead of shattering it sounds, much like the sound of someone walking on gravel, just a crunch. This also limits the effectiveness of a glass breakage microphone added to you alarm since it will change the sound of the intrusion attempt.
That’s just my 4 cents worth, wow I didn't expect to say that much.
