A great resource for Nissan Sentra, Infiniti G20, 200sx, Pulsar, NX1600, NX2000, Tsuru, Primera and Sunny owners.

I have look for 2 days on how VTC works on the GA16de engine. I know What its purpose is and the consept behind how it works but the question I am asking is how does it work on that engine it self? I have seen electronic vtc and I know it controled by the ecu but the mechanical sproket does it work on oil pressure or enertia? If its on oil pressure where do it get the oil feed from? Sorry if it seems like a noob question but I cannot find any good pictures or information on exactly how it works on Nissan motors. Also I found out it changes the cam 20 degrees does it advance the cam or retard it?

I don't want ot go SR because it has alot of aftermarket support already. the KA does not get much support so as a future mechanical engineer I am looking into new ways to create power from the KA. It is actually a really good engine but most people dont have the skill to create power from an engine so they buy one already done up for them. Look at hondas most people want them because they dont need knoledge to create power. I know the KA is capable of creating 250hp in street cars in N/A trim, it just needs to be tested and discovered.

Thanks for the link. Ok now I know its electric but I still dont see how it gets its power. The motor I am gettoing the system from is outof the car and is just the long block am I overlooking something? Is there a harness going to the cam gear?

You said KA in that post, did you mean GA?

And yeah, the GA can make 250, but it's a lot cheaper to do with an SR.

I wasn't aware the GA even had VTC. That's kind of surprising, and cool.

From the pic in that link, it looks like the harness reaches around behind the VTC module.

Oh cool thats great to know. Yah some of the came with it. Iahave my head apart right now and Iam porting it. I am going to get the VTC system from the junk yard today. Hopefully everything works out well. Funny thing is that I have been fixing my sister in laws car for a while now and never even payed attention that her car had VTC. Now I am going to use it to find out what signal the ecu sends to the solenoid at what rpms. From there I can figure out what angle the cam is at with the different signal strenghts. Whenever I have all my datat I am going to look for another cam and maybe install it for the exhaust side. I will have to do some testing on the ka to find out what is the best angle for the KA at different RPMS. I am expecting the ka to acheive 172 stock (to the crank) with just the VTC setup. I should gain more than that since the head will be ported and I will be running 240/248 cams. I have an E-Manage on the way so it will also help tune the car. I am also making ITB for the ka too. too bad I only drove the car once before I took it apart so I wont be able to really tell how much improvment i have got doing this. As for the bottom end it is completely stock. I will not be able to get into it untill later since I am doing this in my appartment. I am still debating N/A or Boost. I really want to go N/A because I love that you have to work extra harder to find ways to make power from them thus making me into an even better engine modifier/builder, but I really like the insane pull you get when boost rolls in.
