How does this transmission shift?

I have a 3-speed plus overdrive (4-speed?) transmission. In cars I have owned in the past, up- and down-shifts were accomplished with a noticable "jolt." In the Versa, there are no jolts. Instead, shifts feel/sound more like a slipping clutch. I know it is not a fault (the test car I drove did the same). So, why?

So it is the S model Automatic? Same transmission as any other car then. Just newer I guess so the shifts are smoother.

It's a new car so it will drive as such. Also some cars are designed to shift like that to make the ride smooth. If an automatic shifts hard, it's either because it needs maintenance or it's designed for performance (fast shifts which causes a "jolt"). But that is not a Versa so it shifts smooth.
