Just as the title says, Im afraid that I have a blown head gasket. Im not sure though. I blew a wastegate line off a few weeks ago and over boosted. I could hear detonation so I got out of it very fast. Now my car idles very wierd....like very bouncy at idle, stays at the same rpm for a sec or 2 after the clutch is depressed, and it ran alittle hot with me (2 marks away from the H on the temp gauge) on a long trip yesterday. I know the car needs a little coolent and probably needs spark plugs, but I dont know how a car acts when it has a blown head gasket. Any pointers would be great. Thanks everybody.

you will see white smoke coming out of the exhaust when you have a blown hg.(most of the time)

and yeah the idle will be bouncy(maybe, maybe not, but on my eclipse it has a blown hg, but its not just throwin white smoke but blue smoke(oil), so both those things can cause the bouncy idle)

If you blew a head gasket, i think your oil and water would mix, making your oil like a creamy color.

Look for black specs in the coolant. Overheating is def a symptom.

look for the following:

Oil in coolant

coolant in oil

Oil or coolant fouling of the spark plugs

You might have gotten lucky and just fouled the plugs or burned off an electrode from the detonation. Weak spark can cause the same eratic idle, etc.

the motor only has 40k on it. There is no smoke....ever. No oil in coolent. Maybe I just have a bad vac. leak. I dont know whats wrong with it.

just my two cents...

how does it run when u drive it? like it was or has the characteristics changed? does it sound like a volkswagon beetle at some rpms while driving? coz if it does then u might have fractured a ring land, i ran a 125 shot of nitrous on mine and bounced of the speed limiter... soon after that it started idling rough and at high speeds sounded like a vw beetle, temp was normal and no oil in coolant or vice versa, just a burble kinda idle, like structure says, a leajdown and compression test is the best way to find out, good luck and i hope u solve ur problem

maybe its just not completely blown.

you might have a small headgasket leak which is causing air to be trapped in cooling system and close the thermostat in result.

i say if you keep bleeding the air out and it keeps coming back, then it prolly has a small enough leak which is gonna cause daily driveability problems (pulling over to let motor cool down all the time, etc).
