it's time for new tires for my 93 q. i bought a spare set of factory wheels for snow tires, but am having second thoughts about purchasing and maintaining 2 sets of wheels/tires. if i choos not to go that route, i'll be looking to buy some all-season tires. can anyone comment on any all season tires they might own? i'm not looking for a flat out performance tire--i would say quality and comfort rank pretty high on the wish list, as do decent wet and snow traction. i live on the coast of massachusetts, so i defintely drive in snow, but not as much as if i were further inland. thanks.

Michelin Pilot H4 235/60/15 is the best all-season tire in terms of strength and longevity. I doubt it's very good in snow, but not many all-season tires are good in snow.

I've been pleased with my Yokohama AVS dB in wet, icy, or snowy weather -- 225/60/15, directional tread pattern -- and they're less expensive.... but we don't get much nasty weather in Atlanta, and I can't compare to other all-season tires (except cheapo Dunlops I used to have.... those don't count).

I have a question on tires also, I recently purchased my Q. It has almost new, 5000, miles on the tires, They are General touring 95 S. I believe the 95 ia o.k. but if I don't drive over 80-85 is the S rating ok. I hate to throw away a good riding tire with all kinds of thread left away, however, I don't want to kill someone or myself either! Any ideas or comments?? Wayne

I would plan on new tires in the spring. They're not strong enough for a Q and are probably falling apart inside --- will soon be hard to keep in balance.

There are plenty of decent tires under $100 each to fit standard rims. H-rated (130 mph) is the minimum safe speed rating regardless of how fast you drive.

If they are all sesaons I would recommend you use them for gentle winter driving only.

An "S" rating is a giveaway for a weak tire, probably too weak for a car as heavy and powerful as a Q45.This should apply even ifyou do keep speeds low.

You got it Tory - Let me know what you guys are into and I'll give you the scoop.

Example - What's your $$$ preference on motels? I'll see what I can drum up (I don't have many connections for hotels, unfortunately). Does your wife like to shop? Whadda y'all want to do in the valley?

Here's some ideas: Rawhide (a western-town attraction), Taliesin West (for the Frank Lloyd Wright buffs), McCormick RR Park (various scale running trains in a beautiful park), Old Town Scottsdale, Fashion Square and the Borgota (for the well-heeled tourist shopping experience), Desert Botanical Gardens, Phoenix Zoo (better than the SD Zoo IMO), Hall of Flame (firefighting museum), Tempe Town Lake, Heritage Square (old town Phoenix), the State Capitol (very cool USS Arizona museum), South Mountain Park (largest muni park in the world; has petroglyphs and you can LOOK DOWN [that's right] on planes landing at Sky Harbor Airport), Heard Museum, Phoenix Art Museum, tour the Bank One Ballpark (home of the D-Backs and an AWESOME place to have lunch), next door to America West Arena (home of the Suns).

If you can sneak away for a couple hours we could get lunch at the ballpark and jam over to Scottsdale to see Joe - Always a great way to blow a few hours.

E-me offline if you decide to come down and I'll give you my cell #.

When I lived up north with my previous Q I had real good luck with Bridgestone Blizzaks on winter wheels. The wimpy speed rating wasn't a problem, as driving fast in the winter with either slippery or sandy roads wasn't a player. They gripped great in the snow and weren't too noisy when the roads were clear. Be sure to put them on all 4 corners.

I recently purchased a set of Yoko YK 420s. They are GREAT! I thought I needed a new carrier bearing for my driveshaft. Not. I thought I needed a four wheel alignment badly. Not. I thought that I might have the left rear axle bearing going out because of a rubbing noise/vibration. Not. The car is super quiet and smooth now. Beautiful. Still need fresh suspension components, however.

In the limited snow I encountered on my recent "Palm Trees and Salt Water" trip, the new tires were about 1000% better than the GoodYear Eagle HPs I replaced. The old tires were completely useless. The 420s were excellent. I highly recommend them.

I have 16 rims on my 91Q and highly recommend the BFGoodrich KDWS in 225-55-16. An all season tire with 400 AA A rating, W speed rating, and only $103 each plus shipping from TireRack. First all season tire I have used in this size that actually has some snow grip, and I drive between NJ and Vermont.

Unfortunately, only made in 16, 17, 18 inch sizes.

Michelin Arctic Alpins are still in good shape after 2 winters, very good traction, just a slight whine on the highway (sounds like a distant jet engine). I like them better than the Blizzaks I had on a previous car. The Blizzaks lost their soft compound quickly, but were great when new. Almost new Michelin XGT-H4 were useless in any accumulation of snow.

Pilot H4 are not snow tires but have an all season compound for decent traction in colder temperatures at least down to 20-25F [vs Summer tires design optimum of 75F] below that you will need a real snow tire just to get a soft compound at temperature.

You just cannot make a tire compound that is good at 20F and 100F much less the 150F [200F is possible] that tires see in Summer.

thanks for the replies guys---vimyj--where and when did you get the yk 420's? i couldn't find any info on them anywhere. k1xv--i'm running stock 93 (15") wheels, otherwise, that's the kind of recommendation i'm looking for. -i can attest to the michelin pilots not being too good in the snow--they were on my last car and not what i'm looking for up here. -i'm leaning towards dunlop sport a2's at the moment. tirerack has them for a good price, i've combed the web for reviews, both professional and consumer, and people seem very happy with all aspects, but are split down the middle with regards to snow traction. as cheaply as i might get them, i think i'll give them a try--will call tirerack tomorrow and if they have anything to add to this, i'll post it. thanks again

If you live in MA,

Get the Blizzaks, they are kinda reasonable in your tire size.

I used to live in MN, no prob w/ Blizzaks.
