I am replaceing both the outer and inner tie rod ends. The outer was easy - but how do you take off the inner tie rod ends? Looks like it just screws off - but what about that plate (lock plate) on there - do I need to take that off?

Thanks

They just screw off and the lock plate gets a little bent when you do it.

thanks silencer - what a pain to take those out - almost as bad as the ball joints.

When putting them back in how tight does it need to be? just snug or does it need to be torqued?

Instructions did not said to put locktight on that end.

I assume you can reused the lock plate even though its a little bent up?

One sec while I check FSM, (it's been a while since I did this)...

Says here to tighten it down to 58-72 ft-lb for the inner part, 27-34 ft-lbs for the nut that connects the inner and outer and 22-29 for the castle nut then put the cotter pin back in.

It's says that is a sealing point so a little blue locktite wouldn't hurt. When I replaced mine, my inner tie rods came with replacement lock plates. I don't see why you couldn't just bend it back into shape and re-use it though.

Which section of the FSM? I'm looking in the ST section but it's a little vague. I'm still not sure just how to change mt tie rods.

it should be under steering.

Tie rods (this is assuming you've already pulled the dust boot free from the rack housing)

Outer - pull the cotter pin, undo the castle nut, whack the ball joint out of the knuckle, loosen the nut on the tie rod inner that pushes up against the outer tie rod then take a wrench to the inner to keep it steady and take another wrench to the outer to unscrew it off.

Inner - take a flat head screwdriver and whack the lock plate free. You might have to bend some of the tabs back. get a large wrench and bust that inner tie rod free from the rack.

huh? what piston? You mean the steering rack? The threads will come loose before you bust up the rack. It's a beefy metal rod. Taking a screw driver to pry back the locking plates will make your life much easier. If you're doing the inners, get a new locking plate from the dealer before doing this job.
