Alright, I've posted a bit of this in my other thread but not getting help. I'm not exactly a noob when it comes to fixing stuff so what the heck! Can't get the dang rear wheel hub off. Working on the passenger rear. I have the retaining nut off, the 36mm one, and the washers. I used a hub puller and pushed out the axle and pulled the 4 bolts holding it from behind. It won't budge. I don't seen any more bolts on it and don't see anything else in the FSM diagrams. Tightened the puller more and it won't budge. I'm ready to get out the explosives.

For the record, if this is always required to change the wheel studs this is a stupid design. I'd rather do my plenum job again

Geez no help huh, well I got it on my own. Hub puller pushed out the half shaft and then had to use a slide hammer to get the hub separated from the bearing sleeve (or whatever it's called). Once I got it out I realized there was another large bolt that I think is holding it in there. Not sure you could get the new wheel studs installed without separating the bearing section from the hub but I'm not sure. Repacked the bearings and it went back together pretty easily. Next time that will be much easier but dang that was a pain. Pretty stupid that you have to pull that hub off like that just to install new wheel studs.

you can take the bearing and hub out as an entire piece, takes like 20 mins one way...

As far as I remember we have never had to replace rear wheels studs.

If someone foolishly used wrong wheels or lug nuts, we just replace entire assembly since it probably is out of specification as to flatness and runout anyway.

5 bolts out of the rear of the bearing/hub assembly and it comes out I assume? I thought it was just the 4 around the half shaft but after I got the hub off I realized that one large bolt was holding it as well. Where were you a couple days ago when I was about to take a sledge hammer to the car. That was the most frustrating project I've done yet...and I've done a lot of work on this car myself. Mainly because I knew it wasn't supposed to be that difficult, just couldn't figure it out.

i had to replace several studs on my Q. IO drilled a hole in the stud at least down to where it is pressed in the hub. I then squirted "cold spray" in the hole. You have to modulate the spray, if you spray full force you are wasting it. A small tap removed the studs when they were cold enough.

No trouble getting out the busted ones. I was just brain dead and couldn't figure out how to get the dang hub off to install the new ones. Guess one could put the new studs in the freezer for a while prior to installing them, they'd go in a little easier.

I have replaced studs in the past, but not on a Q. I put couple washers over the stud. Then I tighten the lug nut until the stud is pressed in the hub. I will be replace my studs with longer ones, since I am using spacers.

For future reference, I can report excellent results with Permatex aluminum-based anti-seize compound on the stud threads - No thread galling, and not the slightest hint of nuts loosening up more than a year after installation. A little dab on just the threads - leaving the nut/wheel interface completely dry - does the trick...

I tried the washer/tightening method and the stud wouldn't go all the way in. Maybe if I froze it first. The first stud I had to cut off with the cutting wheel because it galled up and wound't go in or out and never seated all the way in.

I'll have to pick up some of that Permatex compound before I put the wheels back on.
