im in your boat i dont like the shifter. it be nice to have a metal one but i think this shifter is a bit annoying to replace

Ohh, I'm not replacing it (even though I have a good shift knob I'd like to install), I need to take it off to remove the map pocket under the a/c controls. Any help would be great.

I wrapped it up in a heavy rag and took a pair of big channel locks to it.
