I know i can take them off without help, i just need to know if there is a order to remove things.

Do you unbolt the cam gears first? Is there some way to loosen the tension on the timing chain first? Will the springs pop out when i take off the cames? (stupid question, i know, but it would be nice to know if **** is going to pop out at my face.)

thanks in advance, -matt

Oh yeah, i removed the coolent pump and the coolent shot out all over the place (including my pants my pants) I even drained it before hand as much as i could.

Great guide!

Yes I know it's an s14 don't worry. Everything is the same besides the valve cover shape and the VTC lobe on the intake cam.

edit: The cams themselves have a spot for a wrench up front. You will need a really thin 1" open end wrench to hold the cam in place while you undo the 24mm bolt holding the cam onto the sprocket. The sprocket bolt is on at a good 90+ ft lb. so be careful not to move the cam while you take off the sprocket.

well, im taking off the whole head of the motor to replace the head gasket, To get the the head bolts, i have to take off the cams and to remove the head the chain had to be disconnected. But thank you very very very much, that helped a BUNCH.

Yes after you pull the cams off you can access the 8 head bolts. Be careful when taking off the cams because you will expose the rocker arms and they are not bolted or clipped on in anyway so be careful not to knock them out of place or off the shims.

edit again: also if you want. Carefully take off the rocker arms to access the hydraulic lifters to check them for play. The lifters need to be pulled out of their holes very carefully and they are just stuck in with oil suction. There's directions on this in the s14 fsm, but I forget the exact page #'s this late. Anyways off the top of my head the lifters should have less then 1mm of play. If more you have to manually pump out the air from them in a big bowl of oil. It's fairly simple to do, just messy.

After inspecting my motor, it looks in amazing shape, no metal shavings in the oilpan, the turbo still looks great, clean valve train, and the OEM clutch is still good too. So i dont think im going to take out the hydraulic lifters unless i need to do that to install the rocker arm stoppers i got.

Nope you won't need to remove any of that the RAS installs over the cam.

I would go ahead and take out your shims (2) and rocker arms (1). Put them in a baggy and label the bag according to their position in the head. As for the hydrolic lifters, do what Swift drift advised: if the hydro lifters have more than 1mm depression, you need to bleed out all the air. To do this, you need to stick a small stick down the top of the lifter and push down on the "ball" to get all the air out. All this must be done while the lifter is completely submersed in oil. I used the smallest hex tool i could find to push on the ball and did the submersing in a tupperware full of oil. Afterwards, I placed the lifters in little disposible dishes fill with oil. Make sure you do not place the lifters on their side, unless submersed in oil, or else they will get air inside of them.

I say remove the shims, lifters, and rocker arms because you will mostly like need to turn your head on its side to clean the underneath (in order to make sure no leftover stock gasket is left).
