How do you properly set the timing on a KA24e?

How do you properly set the timing on a KA24e?

I need to make sure my base timing is correct. I am getting ready to chip my car and the base timing needs to be right on. I know how to set timing normaly with the timing light and turning the cap and all. But do you need to put the ecu in a certian mode or unplug the tps sensor or any other little things that i am forgetting?
