I'm from Indiana and we have no emmisions test whatsoever here, (The first upgrade to both of my Jeeps was to get that restirctive cat outta there ) Anyway I'll be graduating soon and alot of the chemistry/electrical engineering jobs are in so california. I have an 89 240SX and will be putting an RB20 engine in it soon. I was curious, how do you guys pass, whats involved. I know OBDII checks the oxygen sensors past the cat and the canister along with the pressure to see if its purging or a gas cap isn't sealing. But OBDII wasn't on cars toll 96 so what do they do if your car is older? is there exemption for a car after it reaches a certain age? Being that I'm from Fort Wayne and Ohio and Michigan are within 25 min I used to hear horror stories of people having vehicles not passing (prolly cause they got them from Indiana and someone ripped out the cat). Anyway will I be able to pass with this engine stock??, modified??? What happens if you don't? Also is Phoenix similair? Thanks If anyone can help me out I really know very little about this

cars 30 years of age and older are exempt. All others must pass a test. what you want to do is go to.

Thanks for the info, so I would have to swap back to my original engine if I want to pass. Also do they check to see if it is the original engine. If not could I maybe run 2 cats or use a megasquirt computer to adjust mixture. Why don't JDM engines pass, Like I said I don't know that much about it, but if the standards are just stricter one would think yo could add a second cat and adjust the mixture with something like megasquirt to pass anyone done something like this before let me know thanks

whether you can pass the sniffer or not, there is a relatively indepth visual test. They check to make sure it's the right engine, all emissions equipt is in place, and there are no mods without CARB stickers. Not obviously, people get by anyway, you just have to know someone. But if you can't pass the sniffer, good luck. IF you can find someone to pass you, it's gonna run you a few hundred bucks.

you cant use jdm engines becuase they were not made available in the US, hence jdm, but thats the way the law is written. Also because of the way the law is written you cannot have 2 cats on the car unless that was also available. Basically think of it like this, if it wasnt available on the car stock or have a CARB EO number, then it is illegal and fail on the visual inspection

Be aware that if you bring an out-of-state car into california, you could be in for quite a painful registration process. I would make damn sure it is stock and legal for the first registration. From there on out pick your battles as you wish.

what exactly do they do if you are caught with an illegal engine? do they just make you change it to the stock engine?
