hey guys,i have a 3 inch catback with a high flow cat installed in my car and a straight through PRO1 muffler (dont ask me, came with the car.. ) the exhaust is REALLY loud compared to most other exhausts, especially now that i installed the s13 cams (248/248).

what do you guys do to quiet the exhaust note (no i dont wanna put the silencer tip on my exhaust..)

where can i get a resonator (glasspack?) and should i have it welded into my exhaust piping somewhere?

Thanks

Max

I was gonna say get a silencer, but since you don't want one...

A resonator would help, or you could get some smaller piping(3'' is a lil big for N/A don't ya think?)

or you could always add a turbo, I hear they quiet down the exhaust too:D

get another muffler/resonator fitted inline of the exhaust system, before the muffler.

Make sure that any resonator you chosse has a perforated core...most "glasspacks" do not.

Something like a MagnaFlow muffler...those are awesome.

hm.. the magnapacks look like glasspacks somewhat, is that what you were talkin about orion? they have a stainless steel case and perforated core :ylsuper

or should i get one of those oval/round body universal mufflers with 3 inch inlet/outlet?

lol nice, i wont be able to afford a turbo for a while though, and ill hate noise pretty soon, besides resonators (straight thru design mufflers) dont really hurt performance.. or so i read.

any of the magnaflow universal round body muffler (straight through perforated) will work; a resonator is just a tiny muffler. Doesn't have to be stainless either (stainless to stainless just welds better).just make sure they'll fit the space you have (under the rear pass bench for S13, or along the driveline).. if it's a close fit, but still touches other parts... use a hammer and pound away.

there was a DSM i know of that runs 3 3" mufflers just so the car's quiet when the guy dropped off his girlfriend at the parents at night.

Yep...they also make a standard aluminized 4" round "bullet" mufler that works well...3" in/out.

Or use another muffler...that really quiets it down, and although it's bigger than the resonator, it flows just as well (a 3" perforated tube is a 3" perforated tube, no matter what's surrounding it)

I just got a glasspack from JCWhitney for mine. It quiets a little. The stock resonator on mine was 12 inches so I just got a 12 inch long glasspack. It was like $16 and is aluminized and everything. This was because I got a hotshot and a 2.5 high flow cat as well as 2.25 piping, all mandrel bent. So it was that glasspack and a Dynomax super turbo muffler and a dual tip. It actually turned out pretty good for somebody who had never welded in his life. It is right at the verge of being too loud for me, which is about perfect. I have heard other people say it is perfect, not too loud and yet sporty sounding. Not ricy, i hate rice. Just an idea for you. 3" seems too big for what ya got. I highly doubt any 3" resonator/glasspack will quiet it enough for you. An additional muffler will probly be what your looking for. I'll reccomend Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers cause I use one and it was $35. Good luck!

here is a good website to show the loudness of different exhaust components. Also has some interesting tech articles as well. Unfortunately I believe he passed away, so save these pages before they disappear!
