Hello Again.

This is a follow up or a branch-off of my last topic. Since there seems to be no possible way to get a KA-T smogged w/o doing any major adjustments. I wanted to get a total view of what you all are doing to get your ride to pass.

I have done my searches and I hope that this will try and consolidate a lot of the other tid bits of info into hopefully one topic.

I know that there are many ways to pass. But I'd like to try and get a better and broader view of ways we as a community pass.

I'll try to rattle off some ideals I have. Please chime in at any point to either correct or clarify me as I am NO subject matter expert in this.

1) Keep KA stock remove all turbo parts and tune till it passes.2) Keep a passing KA stock and swap your modded engine out for the tests.3) Know someone who will hook it up at the test site.

This is what I have collected so far. Any other Ideals?

The emmissions certificate has the VIN number on it in almost every state now...otherwise a good idea.

Here my almsot 100% pass method;

1. Retard your base timing 4-5 degree's2. Run car down low on fuel, add 2 gallns of denatured alcohol3. Have motor completely warmed up when doing actual test4. Remove 1 fuel injector clip, this will effectivly raise your AF raio 2 points and turn that cylinder into an air pump

I passed without even having a Cat installed

what does an AZ smog test consist of? CA was pretty tough 5 years ago when I lived there, I can't imagine it's gotten any easier.

They do a tech inspection, which involves lookin under the hood and looking under the car for a Cat, I have a fake Cat installed. They check the gas cap seal and then you go onto a dyno for idle then cruising measurements.

I also leaned my mixture out with the SAFC while on the dyno...worked awsome.

Man I didn't think they would look at the CAT as well!

WDRacing: I eventually plan on moving to Arizona once the hospital moves to the new site in Gilbert. So setting up my car correctly here is even more important now knowing that AZ has such high standard.

what afr did you tune for? do you just drive very gently (out of boost) while you are tuned this way? when the inspector does the test drive, how do you make sure they don't beat on it too badly? i guess they'd be asses if they revved over 3k in somebody else's car, but i dunno if i trust them, either.

I was on the dyno with my wideband when I set the AF so low, but I only turned down the idle AF, not the WOT AF when your on boost. Just stay out of boost and out of the high throttle map and you'll be golden.

With the base timing retarded and the alcohol in the tank you can lean out to like 16/1 AFR at idle and also without a load on the motor when on the dyno.

No test inspector drives the car, you simply roll onto the dyno, and they measure the car at idle, then with the car going about 30 mph. Just stay out of boost and your fine.

Kimura, I hate to tell you this, but there is no legal way short of taking it to a referee to get a turbo KA legalized for CA. This has been gone over endlessly.Following WDs advice, you might be able to pass the sniffer, but guess what? Cali has both a visual and VIN targeted smog requirement. They key in the VIN (or scan the door UPC) and the computer tells tham exactly what to look for on the car, and what its emmisions limits are.If you can get someone to ignore the visual, then why not get them to help you with the emmissions? If you are going illegal, you are in trouble the same if you go half way as if you go all the way.I reccommend you simply stay with CA legal parts. It is what I do. Which is to way... I am factory original.
