I looked down there and looks pretty complicated! Is there a way to do it that doesnt involve lifting the engine?

Sometimes it does involve jacking up the motor. Depends on the motor.

I haven't done it, but I have a 4x4 so I have a front diff in my way. on 2WD it is much easier.

1. drain oil
2. Start unbolting oil pan
3. if you have an impossible to get to bolt, then jack up the motor and get it off, and try to remove pan. Inspect oil pickup and replace as needed.
4. put new rtv and bolt it back to spec.
5. then finish the oil change.

Also guessing from the sig, you have a S13 hatch, most likely a 240sx.

Does everyone with an S13, buy a nissan truck as a second vehicle?

theres this piece that goes from one side of the chassis to the other thats right infront of the oil pan. you know how it goes slim then bulky towards the back? well its right in front of the bulky area and then the transmission is right behind that area. It looks like a cross member

lol, I'd have to be reading that while staring in my motor bay to know what you are talking about. But spanning to either side of the truck does sound like a front subframe cross member, I could be more helpful with a picture circling what you are talking about.

The part of the oil pan that drops down the lowest is called the sump, Trucks are usually rear sump meaning the cross member goes in front of it.

Why go to an AE86 after a 240? Usually its the other way.

I guess it doesn't matter now that you wised up and Got another Nissan.

Also you should enable your PMs. They are handy for quick responses.

2wd model...

remove sway bar
remove suspension crossmember
lower steering crossmember by unbolting it from the mounting point on the passenger side frame and knocking it down (may need big rubber hammer)

that will make the pan able to drop out and clean and replace gasket

i just wanted something different. Had no job and everything was leaking in the 240. No one wanted to buy it so i traded it a few months later. then after having the corolla for a month i just had to go back to Nissan. Toyota seems like a female brand. Everything inside of it seems girly.... idk maybe just me. Now that i have the 720 it just seems RIGHT! I also had a white 91 300zx twin turbo. 240 was white and 720 is white

yeah the process is annoying. they made it where there was just stuff in the way lol. the pan drops without lowering the steering crossmember but you can't get the pan out of the truck without lowering it because the oil pickup is in the way of removing it

Its easier to drop out the oil pick up than to drop the steering cross member. Its only two bolts to remove but you have to be careful not to damage the gasket and when reinstalling the pick up pipe.

it wasn't on mine... there was no way i could have reached the pick up easily enough to remove it either way... i know on mine the steering crossmember took about 30 seconds to drop and 2 minutes to reinstall

Sometimes its like that. I dropped the steering cross member this time when I was redoing the mountings and repairing the sump, because I did not have the right size of socket wrench.

Awwwww Cmon guys. Quit Ur whining. U act as if it is such a big deal. Try it on a 4x4. I have 1 w/ a bad #4 rod bearing. It sat 4yrs B4 I got the bloody engine out. 20min later after the steam bath the bearing problem was confirmed...and I didn't have 2 struggle w/ the oil pan or damage the pick-up. And just think...when all is said and done, mine will have all new parts and no leaks...and run better than URs. :rotfl Oh well. Good luck 2 U...and 2 me. :wavey:

On my KA all I did was drop the engine crossmember to get to the pan. I forget how different the Z series pan is to from the KA though. I used a big punch to line the bolt holes on the x-member when I was done.
