I'm not doing complete fill ups, just trying to figure out my gas mileage based on my last three receipts. (didn't have the money to fill it up all the way)

I'm using two different software programs that are supposed to calculate gas mileage based on odometer miles, total paid, gas amount per gallon, and total gallons purchased. The problem is they are both giving me number that are completely different than each other, and way off.

I have to be getting better gas mileage than this. I have a '96 240sx, stock ka24de. Only modification is intake, twin electric fans, and a magnaflow exhaust.

One program says I'm getting 4.63 miles per gallon! The other is saying I am getting around 9 point something... Less than 10 mpg... On my stock 2.4L 4 cylinder.

Driving is mixed city/highway.

Any help would be great, thank you.

Easiest way to do it would be to fill up ALL the way when you get gas and then calculate it.

If you don't fill your tank completely then you have no way of knowing just how much gas you started with as opposed to how much you used. At least if you have a 17 gallon tank, you know there is about 17 gallons in the tank when full.

Also, the calculators are probably calculating it assuming that your tank is full, which is probably why you're getting such low numbers.

Well yeah, you need some consistency in your tests. Fill it up, pump it full until the gas pump "stops" itself from pumping, dont squeeze any extra in to round to the nearest dollar or anything. reset tripometer

Go driving, long as you want normal everyday driving, use the whole tank if you want the most accurate number I suppose, but whenever you do fill up, fill it right back upto full, until the pump "stops" itself again.

Then write down how much fuel you just put in the tank to fill it, and do the math with how many miles you got out of that tank

I know the old way. Thanks guys I'll do it that way. I was planning on doing that but then I downloaded this software to track maintenance and all that for your car, and one of the features let you put in your gas receipt data along with your odometer reading (I write it down on all receipts now) and calculates your average MPG. Not a feature I was looking for but it was there so I used it.

Well I put in the data for the last three times I put in gas, but none of the three were fill ups. I figured the odometer reading and with the data it would calculate it out correctly, but there is no way (that I know of that I can be getting 9 mpg in a NA KA. That's when I downloaded a second program that did the same and it said I was getting 4.something MPG, I know that can't be correct unless I was pouring out gas as I drove.

Sigh, I guess I will just do it the old fashioned way like everyone recomends. I also wasn't sure if my tank size was 15 or 17 gal. Thanks, now I know.
