Tried starting up my car today. I put in a built engine with 10,000mi on it and swtiched from auto to 5spd. The car will turn over but not catch. i heard one cylinder firing once or twice. I keep tryin to gas cuz that would get it to run before whne the timing was way off but not idle. Then i pulled the plugs to test for spark which it had. It had fuel from the plugs being wet and my fuel pressure gauge. When i looke into cylinder#1 i could see a puddle of fuel. The cylinder wasnt completly full but could see a build up of fuel. Are there any tricks to get the fuel out of the cylinder?

hmm, i had this tool that pumps out auto transmission fluid in my brother's cars b4 i drop the pan to change the filter...

u can also use a syringe-type tool to "suck" out the fluid...that or a long small heater hose and a pump.

that, or just let it evaporate for a few hours...

maybe syphon it out with your mouth using some sort of thin hose, through the sparkplug hole.

pull fuel pump fuse and crank the car a couple of times until it dies that should get the flood out.

I had to do that once on my RX-7. Lots of smoke when you get the gas out and into your exhaust :/

But it worked. Not sure whether it would hurt anything on a cylindered car(not sure if the exhaust system is different).

yea i unpluged the injector plugs and turned it over a couple times and seemed as if most of it come out of cylinder #1. could really see the other cylinders due to bad lighting. im goin back to the car tomorrow morning again. and i better get it running. the only thing it could be is the timing being way off and the cylinder got flooded

um it's easier through the fuse for the fuel pump just gotta pop the hood, locate the fuel pump fuse, pop off the fuse cover and pull the fuse. crank till it dies, then you'll be in the clear.

note: reinstall fuse.

doh! i guess that's different from the s13; it's on a panel near the battery, under da hood... guess he didn't see your car's year.

If i had a big puddle of fuel in the cyl, i wouda "sucked" it out thru the spark plug hole, since I've heard that washing down the cyl wall w/ gasoline would glaze the cyl n what not... but, i guess i'm over-cautious...

I guess the amount of gas in the cyl can't produce a "hydrolock" condition??? i'm still trying to figure out this phenomenon.

I saw a 300ZX go through a big puddle & blew a connecting rod out of the block, but this may be d/t another condition beside hydrolocking...

Hydrolocking is a risk. Liquid can't be compressed like air can. If there's more gas in the cylinder than what it takes to fill the combustion space when the piston is at top dead center, then you have a severe risk of hydrolocking. The gas will leak down over time, but if you try to crank the engine, it can't leak past the rings fast enough and you can bend a connecting rod.

thats why i was going to say, pull the fuelpump fuse, remove sparkplugs, and crank car for 3 or 4 shots of 10 sec. each.

Even if you had pulled the fuel pump fuse, isn't it still a risk to crank the engine when you're worried about hydrolocking?
