I looked in my SM tonight for instuctions on how to remove the starter - there must have been a type-o, as it said: "Removal of Starter" - then its blank!!! ugh!! Can anyone tell me, in as much detail as possible, how to change the starter? I have read a post that says I have to raise the engine - how exactly is that done?

As always, many thanks guys!

Stephen

I took one look at how little room there was....went to auto shop picked one up for 125...then had someone do it for 100....it was one of those deals where it wasn't worth it to mess with it...

I suppose if you had a lift it would be much easier.... jack stands would drive me nuts. I have a 90Q

That's correct; I have a 94Q. I also have a service manual and the directions to remove/install the starter are a blank. Can anyone tell me, in as much detail as possible, how to change the starter? I have read a post that says I have to raise the engine - how exactly is that done? Q45 Tech? Anyone who's done it themselves?

Thanks,

Stephen

you would have to somehow raise the car off the ground, and lower the engine (you cant really go up inside the hood area)

Why would anyone need to change a Q starter .........one of the rarest proceedures we do........we change more engines, more diffs, more everything than starters.Change hundreds of relays over 7 years, changed cables, changed ignition locks, but starters why..........mine has 250,153 miles and at least 20,000 starts in 13 years [2 relays nothing else other than 4 batteries and 2 alternators].

Have seen some real hatchet jobs by people changing starters and destroying flywheels.

Thanks Q45 Tech - Honestly, I really don't know if its the starter. The starter/engine turn hesitates sometimes which I assumed was the starter since the battery is less than a year old. I would think a relay would either work or not. The cables/wire seem to be in good condition. The ignition lock I don't know about, I have not done any SM testing on it.

Many thanks to all who posted.

Stephen
