How do I locate my starter under the car?

It's going out, I was told I could bang on it to get it going until I can get the part replaced, but I don't know where it is under the car..please help.

banging on it may not help. You should replace it. passenger side of transmission. Getting a hammer to it won't be fun. It's pretty tight up there.

Pretty critical part to not replace at first hint of failure wouldnt you agree????

Starter is located at the back of the engine block below the cylinder head and above the oil pan on the passenger side of the engine. Problem is that access to the starter mounting bolts is extremely limited and thus the starter is a pain in the a$$ to get out. Once out you can have it rebuilt for $80 (local price last month here in San Jose) at a shop that rebuilds starters, generators and electric motors. Search for "starter" to find recent posts, including mine, on how to do it. Good luck.
