Yeah unbolting the starter is pretty hard to get to. Just get under the car and manage to get to it with the right size rachet wrench (17mm? 14mm?) and youll be OK. No tricks. Make sure you have jackstands.

I don't know about the Dohc, but on the sohc there are 2 bolts and the are both on the transmission, or more like the bell housing. Hopefully that might help. Oh I don't know how your going about this but your definately going to have to go underneath.

i replaced the starter on my dohc s13. pain in the *** trying to reach in there to loosen the bolts. there were three i believe. and yes, you will have to get under it, to get a bolt loose and to pull out/out in starter.

by the way, it would better be solved if this was in the technical forum.

you just gotta reach up behind the bell housing. there are a bunch of ribs o the housing and the second bolt is one rib above the one you have out. just get a wrench witha, iirc, 14mm socket and just slide it up in there and wrench the sh1t out of it... try some pen. lube too

It should be alright if you just touched it together long enough to get sparks in your face.

You'll definitely think twice about doing that one next time :)

Sigh. For future reference, ALWAYS disconnect the negative cable when working with electricity under the hood.

i can... but you gotta move stuff, like the motor, but then that would defeat the purpose... :)

just hope you dont get finished installing a brand spanking new one after taking 3 hrs to take the old one out, and have it start the car three times then no more!!! ohhh an then the guy at auto zone wont give you the money back, you and your grandfather rebuild the oldone at 2am to get you home and the next day that prick demands a receipt for that rebuild and calls you a liar when you tell him you did it yourself..ohhh man, my friend had to drag me away from the counter i was fixing to throw the starter at him but he caught me in time!
