I tried "searching" for an answer to my question but couldn't find one. All I got was what the trouble codes meant.

I need directions on how to actually get the trouble codes.

The check engine light on my 1994 J30 (with 40K miles) just turned on last night right after starting the car. The first thing I noticed was that the car was shaking. It feels like the car is missing. I called my local Infiniti dealer but their earliest opening is for Wed, the 31st.

I've recently changed the spark plugs (with OEM NGKs) and and OEM fuel filter. The only thing I did before the check engine light went on was fill up my car with Shell SU2000 (93 Octane) gas.

Since this is my only car, is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?

Any comments/suggestions???

I forgot to mention that I disconnected the neg battery terminal last night to try to 'reset' the computer. I left it disconnected for about 10 hours.

Unfortunately, that didn't do anything. The check engine light is still on and the car is idling/driving rough.

Even though they mis-spell "Infinity" :(, there info is accurate.

Your mini service manaul tells how to access the ECU troble codes. Auto Zone stores can also check for codes. You have a OBDI system on your 94.

Check your plugs. Bad gas?

Rex-Thanks!!! That's exactly what I was looking for.

VimyJ-My local Autozone said they can only pull up codes on 1996 and newer automobiles.

While we are talking about codes and lights, anybody know the most common reason the brake light comes on while driving? (and no, my emergency brake is not on :))

The brake light on the dash? Does it do it mostly during turns and heavy stops? Could be level is low and dips low enough as it "sloshs" during turns and hard stops.

Well I went to get my oil changed yesturday and the guy said that the level was good. He suggested getting my brake pads checked. I do have a little bit of shake when I slow down off the interstate. All I can figure is that it has something to do with cold. It only does it when it is 40 degrees and below. I personally think the switch connected to the parking break is sticking and not showing that it is dis-engaged.

I dunno, I plan on taking it in to get service around the end of january, so I'll get it checked out if it has not fixed itself.

96 and newer = OBD II . My local Autozone has a sign that says "OBD I Only". Go figure.

Do you have your service manual? Get one if you don't. The Source.

noetic1, did you fix your check engine light problem? I've found out by experience that the fuel cap, if defective or damaged or even not closed tightly, will make the car engine shake and turn on the check engine light. I usually close the fuel cap until I hear several clicks.

Hope this helps you out.

TakDrift-I actually read a post recommending the same thing you said. Unfortunately my car is still out of commission. It turns out that my #4 cylinder injector is out. I checked the resistance of all of my fuel injectors and they were all within specs except for #4 where I got no reading at all (basically an open circuit).

Now, I'm just waiting for my replacement injector from infinitypartsusa.com.
