the ecu for a black top could be e5 or j4 and the redtop should be 62. Other than that, if the head doesnt have cooling fins on the front of it you have a redtop no question about it.

The #1 way to see if you have a Redtop or a Blacktop is to look at the head. The head of a blacktop has "fins" cut into the front of the head, the redtop is smooth.

Edit: From the looks of it, you have a Redtop.. at least that is a redtop head.

Blacktop

Redtop

thanks, looked at my ecu and it said 62 ... dammit oh well..

one more question... will a red top engine work on a black top ecu? or should i just swap the ecu as well?

coz my red top engine is going into a car that had a blown up black top.

I believe the only difference between 62/63 and the E5 is the o2 sensor.Edit: The o2 sensor on the turbo outlet pipe.

The 62/63 ECU is for redtop and skinny o2 sensor.E5 is for blacktop and fat-type o2 sensor.Mixing the two can cause rich condition.
